small garage? you're looking at quite a bit of a list, i'll name some bare basics
Lift, or some way to get underneath car
Torches (hand truck, safety chain, etc. etc.)
Blast wall to house tanks
Proper containers to dispose of fluids
Oil filter crusher
Coil spring compressor
Large air compressor
Air tools
Complete wrench sets
Complete screw driver sets
Torque wrench
Hand lights
Pry bars
Mitchel on Demand or some sort of complete computer program for car repairs (roughly $6000 on this one alone a year)
Tire balance machine
Tire dismount/mount machine
Contracts to official licensed waste disposal companies (for oil and such)
Pressure system set (to test coolant systems)
Torque sticks (for air tools)
lots of oil/transmission fluid/coolant etc etc
MIG welder
should i go on? this is about 1/100 of the list you're going to encounter to open up your own little shop, i haven't even gotten into OSHA approved items (railings on all drops at least 4? inches away from drop any drop over 6 inches) you need air lines running to all of your bays, doors to open to run cars in, preferably an office, computers, scanners... yeah.

Question answered by ideation
Oh, that’s a leading question. Whatever tools you get, you’ll usually need the one you didn’t bring. Basic, basic tools are:
Work Gloves (leather is acceptable)
Multi-meter
Non-contact voltage tester (also called a “wiggler”)
Screwdriver set -- or a “multi” or 4-in-1 type. You need at least a #1 and #2 Phillips (cross-point), and smaller and larger slot screwdriver (sizes will vary).
Allen wrench set (hex set)
A shorter screwdriver (“stubby”) and an offset screwdriver will be helpful, too.
Lineman’s pliers (pliers include heavy-duty cutter)
Long-nose pliers
Wire Stripper
Wire-cutter (for copper wire)
Small hammer
There are a number of other tools that you will need, but you will know them as you do more complex projects.
Always think safety first – confirm that the circuit you’re working on is not energized (has no power).
Move cautiously – even though the majority of your tools will have insulation, that will not stop the tool from shorting a circuit if one of them is energized (even when you’re not working on that one).
Work with a partner. If one of you runs into trouble, the other can help out.

You could make a hammer with a branch, vines, and a rock. You could make a knife with a broken rock. Most importantly, you can make fire with two sticks (yes, you really can if you know what you're doing) and that's the most important tool of all.
What tools would you suggest for a beginner at sculpting in limestone?
I want to know what basic tools I need and a brief description of what they are for. I have two small wood chisels but I would like a better range of tools to make it a little easier.
Thanks mike1942f and tigris. Both answers were very helpful.

You will destroy the wood chisels if you use them on stone - you need hard "cold" chisels of various shapes made specifically for the purpose along with various weight hammers and grind stones for sharpening and reshaping your tools. Here is a brief tutorial http://www.stonecarver.com/carvtool.html

What kind of tools do you need to put down hardwood flooring?

Question answered by rob s
Chop or miter saw, table saw, hammer . You ll need to rent or buy a flooring nailer.and the special mallet that goes with it.
Or the air driven type along with an air compressor and a finish nailer. Along with all the basic hand tools such as a hand saw for cutting the jams and trim.
Professionals get from 2.50 /3.50 a s/f and since your obviously not a professional, you ll have to charge much less..

What tools and materials do you need to grow a cucumber?
What kind of materials and tools do I need to grow a cucumber? Shovels?

Question answered by RAVEN
you dont need any tools to grow cucumbers
i grow mine in pots, and very successfully too
plant seeds, and water
its as simple as that
not growing or planting season here just now though
dont know about where you are
once the plant is growing, about 10" you need to support them as they grow quite tall and have heavy fruits, but i just plant them against a fence and tie them onto that, they are not difficult to grow, you can plant in the ground and you would need to dig over the soil, but again, simple too do,
if you dont have a pot to plant in and want to plant in the ground, borrow a shovel
expensive to buy just to plant cucumbers
What tools would a vet have to diagnose dog who is vomiting?
I can't afford ultrasound. If there are other tools vets use, I would like to know. Also, are there vets who charge by ability to pay, or sliding scale as my community uses for people.
She is eating everyday, seems mildly happy, loves to have her tummy tickled and I do not feel anything there is unusual.

First of all they do not use tools they use knowledge from long hours in school and they would use the knowledge they know that is effective like asking questions like what the dog eats if the dog eats feces of other dogs does the dog get into people food, trash or dig in the yard?
He would ask you questions so he can come up with some suggestions to help you.
What I would do is look at what your dog does on a daily basis like is he outdoors for long periods of time with out supervision as they eat dirt and can get sick from that
What does your dog do inside the home, does he get into the trash or does he eat the carpet or anything in the house that he shouldn't.?
He would ask what you feed the dog and how much and suggest you feed your dog other food as probably the food you feed is not beneficial etc.
IF you are feeding a low quality dog food, chances are that alone is the cause .. some dogs cannot tolerate low grade dog food and they can get sick or vomit alot.
Are you feeding him human foods? There is another question they may ask.
So if I were you I would monitor the dogs behavior for at least 2 to 3 days and watch the dog carefully and make sure he is not eating things he shouldn't and see for your self and change his food and also make sure he is checked for worms too as they can get them in the ground if they walk in ground that other dogs walk in.
What tools should I take to a beginners woodworking class?
This is the class description:
Students taking this class will work on a pre-selected project using either hand tools and/or small power tools. The project will include most phases of woodworking skills: cutting, gluing, sanding and assembly. Materials for this project will be furnished, however, students are encouraged to bring their own power or hand tools to use.
Any suggestions?

That would depend on how well the shop is equipped with shop tools and hand tools. Start by bringing a good apron, tape measure and pencil. If you are serious about woodworking in the future you'll want your own tools because you won't be able to use THEIR tools and shop forever. I do a lot of woodworking in my small garage. I started out slowly and over the course of a few years have 90% of everything I need. The best investment I made was the Ridgid portable table saw and portable sliding compound miter saw which cost me about $500. each, but have already paid for themselves over and over again. I also have lots of portable drills, circular saws and belt sanders. Because I also do remodeling of other people's homes, I own some pneunamatic nailers and power tools and a good air compressor to power them. Good Luck
Can you claim personal tools on taxes if used mainly at work?
My husband bought almost $15,000 worth of tools(on credit) last year. He mostly uses those tools at work as a mechanic at a dealership, so we wanted to know if we could claim those as a deduction on our taxes this year?
Cowgirl101up13
Question answered by Norman
The fact that the tools were purchased with a credit card is irrelevant. In fact, a cc statement can be used as proof of purchase.
If your husband is an independent contractor at the dealership, he can deduct the cost of the tools as expenses. Indedependent contractors receive a 1099-MISC from their "employer". He should prepare a Schedule C form and report his income & related expenses on this form.
If your husband is an employee at the dealership, he can deduct the expenses if his employer requires him to purchase his own tools. Employees receive a W-2 from their employer. If the expenses are deductible, they are reported on Schedule A as unreimbursed employee expenses.
