How can I appeal to people (young and old) to join our Toastmasters club?
I am currently a member of a Toastmasters club on a college campus. We are a small group of 10-13 but 7 of us come regularly. I want to get the word out to invite more people to our club. I have the sources (radio station, fliers, etc) but I want the invitation/fliers/radio ad to appeal to the people on and off campus, especially to the young folks. Any idea what I can say in the ads or how to do it?

Gosh, Milissa there needs to learn how to do a web search, doesn't she?
OK, your promotion needs to focus on the benefits of toastmasters for these people. I'd try several approaches.
First, I'd put fliers up anywhere that they hold public speaking or freshman communication classes, and let the heading say "Get a Better Grade in your Public Speaking/Communication class--While Having FUN!" Make sure fun is in big letters.
Second, you want to get the word out to any local businesses where people do regular presentations for sales/contracts/public relations/etc. Maybe also the local political parties. I would think the best way to do that would be to send business letters to individuals--call the companies and get the names. Write up a nice one-pager that gets straight to the point: (a) we understand that your job involves regular presentations (b) we'd like to invite you to toastmasters, an organization that can help you improve your job skills (c) history and purpose and process of toastmasters.
Third, find out if local high schools have speech and debate teams; approach them with the same message--Toastmasters lets you polish up your speaking skills in the time-tested way of speaking before a friendly, supportive audience in a relaxed environment.
That's your targeting marketing. Now, the use of radio/newspaper/other public announcements is for follow-up; the idea is that they'll attract only people who are already favorably disposed. I'm going to presume you don't have a big budget :-) so you'll go with the free stuff: public service announcements on your radio stations, free spots in the 'activities' sections of daily and weekly newspapers, and maybe fliers on bulletin boards and places near campus near the beginning of each academic term when new people might be showing up.

Here are the requirements for joining:
After you find a club, attend a meeting and apply for membership. All clubs have a different personality, so you might want to visit several before you make a decision. Clubs occasionally change their meeting time, day and location, so call ahead to verify the details.
Have you ever paid $100 for a one-day seminar? You probably won't pay that for an entire year of Toastmasters. There is a $20 new-member fee, then $27 dues every six months. Clubs may also assess local dues to cover local expenses.
can toastmasters be tailored to suit someone with panic when public speaking, can it be self paced and gentle?
I am thinking of joining toastmasters to gain confidence and learn how to speak in public without panicking. Problem is I get extremely nervous, does anyone know if toastmasters can be self-paced? Thanks!

Question answered by Vera Gabriele
People who go to toastmasters all go for the same reason to lose their fear of speaking in public and they support each other in this .. it is a supportive environment and it will help you.. it is a good idea.. my husband is an introvert and it helped him tremenduously .. and when it's your time to give a presentation.. don't freak out.. by then you will be friends with all the people there and you got one week to plan what to talk about and just be relaxed.. rehease in front of a mirror and in front of your family.. before you get to having to give a presentation. nobody there will judge you for being nervous.. they are all working as a team and you will make some new friends. it is a good idea...xx
What to do if you miss a toastmasters contest?
I missed a toastmasters contest. I should've been there in a seargent of arms role but I lost track of time and missed the meeting. Should I leave some kind of message to a president of the club? I mean, would that be the right way? Or just do nothing.

What to do when all Toastmasters Speakers Cancel?
Hi, this question is written under truly desperate circumstances.
A friend of mine is the scheduler for a Toastmasters meeting. Normally there are one-to-three speeches at a meeting but all of the speakers for tonight's meeting have canceled. Has anyone encountered this problem before and how was it resolved?
My friend is seriously freaking out about this and needs help.

Ouch! I would be flipping out, too. Seriously short notice! Still, these SNAFUs are part of the planning gig. I would be recruiting from friends and fellow members. How about you? Can you take a slot?
Would Barrack Obama benifit from a summer in a Toastmasters chapter to develop his speaking skills?
http://www.toastmasters.org
I've been to a couple of those sessions and they "dock points" from your speeches if you use "umms", and "errs", or "ehhs" like Obama does alot whenever he's not speaking from a teleprompter.

Will Toastmasters help me with my intense fear of public speaking?
I simply cannot make a speech. I sweat, my heart beats uncontrollably, and my mind goes completely blank. If I start attending and participating in Toastmasters meetings, do you think I'll become a fearless public speaker?

Toastmasters is the name of a company that organises groups all arond the world where people go along and improve their skills in public speaking. People learn how to overcome fears, how to pace a speech, where it's appropriate to use humour and how to break things up to keep people interested. It's basically a course that can ruin for a couple of sessions to once or twice a week for a year. It's at the discretin of the person attending and the course they sign up for. A toastmasters speech is simply one of the speeches given to the particular gorup of which you are a member.
Has anyone ever had success with Toastmasters?
I have a terrible fear of public speaking, and I recently heard about Toastmasters. Has anyone had any experience with them?
Thanks in advance!

Can I possbily become a Toastmasters CC in 3 months?
I have a goal to complete in a maximum time of 4 months. I strongly believe that it is achievable but just want some sold honest real world advice. I want to become a Toastmasters Competitive Communicator in 3 months or sooner. I am a pretty decent speaker on any given day. I train my staff; give presentations at work and al host local shows when needed. I have about 10 topics, including the ice breaker to jump right into this game of public speaking. My whole concern is the time frame. Please respond if you actually know my goal is practically possible.

The answer that was given on the culture of your club has some validity. However, that is not a show stopper. I am AC-S, soon to be AC-G (end of April) and AL-B. I have been a Toastmaster in less than 18 Months and should have my DTM by JUL 2007
It is totally up to you and your drive. However, there are some things you should be aware of:
1) If you club meets even once weekly, you will be taking 10 minutes (including evaluation) nearly every week over the month period for your goal. This may be viewed as too much. On the other hand, it may be invigorating and generate a lot of activity from other club members. Success breeds success.
2) You MUST have AT LEAST ONE pocket speech prepared at all times, to leverage opportunities to speak when others bail on your club agenda. The key is to be prepared to give a speech at any given time.
3) Try to join an additional club. The best thing to do is join a club that struggles or a club that is chartering. You can bring new life to the club with your enthusiasm and model the behaviors that make clubs successful. Most important to you, is that you will most likely have the opportunity to speak each week the club meets. In addition, you may find yourself becoming a mentor or assigned by the District to be a coach in the second club.
If you are serious about becoming a Competent Communicator in a short period of time, you should also consider the Leadership Education Track as well. Carry your Competent Leadership Manual to every meeting and have every non-prepared speaking role you participate in evaluated. You will find it springboard's your Leadership development faster than you think. Most Toastmasters don't think about doing this simultaneously, but it is important if you want to develop quickly in the Toastmasters world.
Please check out my new YAHOO! Group for Toastmasters who want to accelerate the path to DTM. The address is shown below.
Good Luck!
