I am a carpenter working in the London area. I make my own furniture and would like to know where to buy good timber from. All the timber merchants near me only sell timber for building in flat sheets etc. I am looking for bigger bits such as bits of tree trunks etc. If anyone can help I would be very grateful. Thank you!
Could they only get them from timber merchants or are there other places like Wicks etc?

I'm looking to make a few small pieces of furniture for the house but I want to use some exotic wood like cherry, walnut, maple, mahogany, teak ans so on but where the heck can you buy this stuff. I've been to B&Q and a couple of timber merchants today but all they have is pine. The model shops have nothing but balsa wood and mdf! Please help!

Specifically near the West Midlands... I want to make my own furniture and need to buy sheets of pine board to cut up. Where can I get this? Have tried timber merchants, have tried Google/Yahoo... Best Answer will be awarded to someone that can direct me to a website in the Midlands selling sheet pine to trade or public. Thanks! KD

My husband came home this week with a small stud to put in his collar (Whooppee) form his firm - a well known timber and builders merchants in the UK. Though he does get 3 days more holiday per year than the stautory minmum I actually think this is quite an insult; he could get gold stars working in McDOnald's for a couple of weeks. To add insult to injury he has actually worked there for about 23 years and while other people who are coming up to 20 years can get a gift worth about £100 because he (and others) had already passed the 20 year mark when this scheme was brought in he cannot get it. So what did you get from your firm?

I want to replace my garden gate with a gate of the same design. The gate is a single sheet of wood in a timber frame. It's about 90cm wide by 110cm high. What type of wood is best for this (plywood, chipboard, or what)? It should be about 2cm thick to be sturdy enough, and to take the screws for the hinges and fittings.

Hi, I would like to build some outdoor furniture, specifically; a table, two (2 Seater) benches and two armchairs. I would like to know what is a good value timber for availability and for price, I have looked around the internet and found teak to be recommended as a strong, suitable timber for this purpose but I would like some expert opinions please. Also I would like to know where to get teak or any other suggested timbers in suitable sizes that can be used for this project. I live in the north east of England and so the supplier would have to be local to that location however I would consider delivery if not too expensive. Thanks in advance.
