What rice do they serve at Greek restaurants?
Does anybody have a recipe for the rice they serve at Greek restaurants (with Greek salad, souvlaki or legs)? It looks like plain rice without vegetables and it tastes delicious! I have no idea how to make it! Any recipes?
It has an off-white colour. Not too white and not too yellow.
I know it's just long-grain rice. What I'm looking for is how to make it, what seasonings, etc.

To the best of my knowledge it is just plain long grain rice. It is definitely NOT tabouli or tabbouleh. That is a parsley salad with bulgur wheat.
What you might want to try is sauteing your rice in a little butter and olive oil just to coat the grains. Then cook it in chicken broth instead of water. It will give it wonderful flavor and will perhaps come close to what you have in Greek restaurants.
Sugar Pie might be right. It could be Basmati which is predominant in Persian and Indian restaurants and which to me has a taste and smell faintly reminiscent of popcorn.
Which is the best resort in Zante between kalamaki and Tsvili?
I am thinking of booking for September. Narrowed it down to these 2 resorts but others would be considered.
I want a nice quiet beach/ pool/ apartments/ hotel somewhere safe but with plently of nice restaurants offering Greek and international cuisine and nice friendly tavernas - I don't mean Irish pubs and English Bars providing Guiness and sausage and chips!!
Don't want to go anywhere where there are gangs of boys/ girls on stag/ hen weekends or loud discos. Want romance for me and significant other. Suggestions? Thanks!

Probably Tsilivi then.
But.. it is a very widespread resort with little "heart" by that I mean little evidence of any real centre as such. Lots of accomodation well away from the beach and up hill.
The resort is set amongst olive groves and vineyards and it has a fantastic golden sandy beach of around 2km long that is well worthy of its Blue Flag of Cleanliness reward.
It is bustling with many family run tavernas, restaurants, bars and nightclubs making it one of the islands ‘hotspots' for entertaining nightlife.
Kalamaki is actually my favourite, but it's close to Laganas where the younger crowd go, although if going in September they will be long gone by then hopefully.
Kalamaki has changed quite a bit over the past few years and the resort is now spread out over a fairly large area. Fortunately most of the development has been concentrated on the main Kalamaki to Laganas road leaving the beach area and back roads relatively undisturbed. The original character of the resort is still there. The bars, restaurants and people who first made it popular are still here.
It's the closest resort to the airport and although there are no night flights, several planes land just after 6.00 AM. Only the western part of the resort is affected and otherwise the resort is fairly quiet and relaxing. It's a good location, close to Laganas, Zante Town and Argassi. Laganas is only a five minute taxi ride away, and taxis run until the early hours of the morning. Don't worry if you don't have a pool as there are plenty of pool bars which are open to the public.
I'dd reccommend the Roseland or Bitzarro Palace in Kalamaki- but wherever you end up- I hope you have a great time!
All the best of luck

How do you make rice like you find at a Greek restaurant?
There are a couple of Greek restaurants that I visit that have the best rice. The two qualities that I like is the taste and the texture. I'm guessing they use a chicken broth and spices - but what I can't figure out is how to make it without the rice being sticky.
Is it the type of rice? Or how it is prepared?
Thanks!

GREEK RICE
1 lb. bacon
1 stick butter
2 cans beef consomme
3 lg. onions
Add salt & pepper to taste
2 cans sliced mushrooms
1 med. head of lettuce
3 lb. rice
6 cubes beef bouillon
1. Put consomme and the bouillon cubes in a saucepan at medium heat (they will dissolve).
2. In a bigger pan or boiler (to make the rice) put the butter.
3. Cut the bacon, the onion (in small pieces) and add them to the butter. Add them one by one, cook on medium-high heat.
4. Add the mushroom. Cut the lettuce and add it to the butter to be "fried".
5. Add the consomme with the cubes to the butter.
6. Add the rice. Stir and add salt and pepper to taste. Wait until it dries, lower the heat to low and put the lid on the pan. Wait until it cooks all together. Serves 8.
Use half of ingredients to make 4 servings.
What is the best thing to order at a Greek Restaurant that almost anyone would like?
I've never gone to a Greek restaurant, and I'm thinking about taking my wife, but neither one of us are sure what we would order. We are very simple in what we like and don't branch out much. What would be something that we would be sure to like?

Agree with Kathy M - souvlaki is pretty basic Greek. It's just lean meat marinated in lemon, garlic and oregano, and grilled. I like lamb the best, but If you are squeamish about lamb, then chicken or beef are very good too!
Keftedes are really good, too; they are just charbroiled meatballs, but very flavourful.
Does anyone have the name of and an authentic recipe for a cold Greek/Turkish aubergine dish?
I recently ate the most delicious aubergine dish at a fantastic restaurant called Half Greek Part Turk in Stockholm. It was cold, like a dip with a smokiness [cumin?] and came with a yoghurt garlic sauce. It may have had tomatoes in it. I want to re-create it, but can't find a recipe online. Any ideas? Thanks! Oh and I recommend the restaurant...

hi there, By the way i am Greek cook , the dish you described is nothing more then a chicken with green beans and potatoes stew, if you want to know how to make it here's what you do, fry some onions till golden in plenty of olive oil, then add chicken pieces and fry till they start to get a little color on the out side (its called caramelizing them), add a tin of chopped Italian tomatoes , add salt and pepper, bring to the boil then turn down to simmer, at this stage you add your green beans that were cut to desired size, half an hour later add your peeled chopped potatoes, you may have to add some water to the pot if it needs it , look its all common sense stuff and its easy for you because you know what the end result should look like, this is never cooked in the oven .

Do they really smash plates at greek restaurants? How do you know which ones you can smash?
I'm just heading out to a greek restaurant now (if it is still open) and want to get smashing!

From the moment you enter the building, you can do whatever you want. Don't ask though as it's considered rude. Just go mental and smash everything in sight.
