What are the roles of a Quantity Surveyor in promoting and helping to create Sustainable Construction?
Quantity Surveyor is also known as a Building Cost Consultant or a Construction Estimator. So I'm curious as to what part can a QS play when it comes to embracing the environment and developing Sustainable Construction.

These guys are really just bean counters. They just keep track of costs, or estimate costs for proposals of a new building. Maybe they can find savings from one part of a project to spend on a "sustainable" part of the project. You need the architect of record to be the one pushing for sustainable construction. Also the owner of the project has to really want to do it. Things like geothermal HVAC systems and living roofs with solar panels are great for sustainable construction. But the up front cost are ENORMOUS! A typical HVAC sytem for a commercial building is about $40,000. A geothermal system in the same building is $500,000. It will pay itself off in the long run, but that could be 15-20 years. Govenment might be able to afford those kinds of upgrades for a school or library that they plan on using for 80 years; but a developer that's trying to make money isn't going to want to spend 10 or 20 times the cost just to "be green".What is the use of becoming RICS chartered member for Quantity surveyors in dubai?
Hi, I have done my B.Tech in civil engineering, I came to dubai as a Quantity Surveyor with 2 years expierience last year. After coming here couple of people in same field are telling that it is good to be member in RICS to get better oppurtunities for my career. Is it true ? What is the use of doing RICS ? How to do it ?

I am studying for a Hnc in September and trying to get a job as a trainee/assistant quantity surveyor so I can learn the job while at college 1 day a week, but struggling to get my foot in the door, I live in Kent and am looking for work around there and London if any one has any tips or contacts would be appreciated thanks

It is good that you are thinking this way. Unfortunately, I am unable to help specifically. What may help would to contact (email, letter, phone or in-person) building contractors (large or small) to see if they will allow you to visit a site. Not necessarily to be formally a trainee QS, but more likely simply to observe and ask the tradesmen questions. I am sure most will be very helpful. In other words you will learn the job from the grass roots. I suggest you make notes of what the work entails. These will help when you get round to learning the theory at college. It really depends on the company and their requirements. Of course unless you are have for a period of time you probably still think you can actually control costs. In the real world you are lucky if you can just know what has been spent. Remember project management is like driving down the highway and trying to steer by looking in the rear view mirror.Is it possible for a Junior Quantity Surveyor to work in Canada?
Studying to be a Quantity surveyor in New Zealand. Work a few years (2-3) to gain NZ experience however, would the same/similar job opportunity exist as a Junior Quantity Surveyor in Canada? Would i need to apply to immigration for the skilled migrant points system? 25 years old when applying.If so, where is work mainly located?? Any possibilities in Vancouver? Anyone with experience in this field of construction would be much appreciated. Thanks

This position is one that also exists in Canada. Vancouver does list this position as one needing applications for various jobs presently. Of course this is something that could change in the future so you may want to review cic.gc.ca to learn about expected skills and professions for future needs. Because you are in New Zealand there are also programs that you might qualify for under 'Young People Program' as a temporary foreign worker for the International Experience Canada Initiative. This program may result in a working holiday visa for a year that would let you find out how working in Canada would be. There are also university and co-op education international agreements for work placement only. This relates to students at Victoria University at Wellington and University of Waikato/University of Victoria. At the links below you could do some further research to see if these might be a starting point for you that could lead to opportunity for a permanent work/residence opportunity.Job role as an admin assistant in a quantity surveyors?

As a Quantity Surveyor practicing in Botswana and South Africa you can use either Microsft QS or QS+ to take-off from drawings. I want the website so that i can communicate with the provider and understand how the software works.
