How to become a better plant engineer designer?
I am an engineering Junior soon to be senior at my school and I have a cumulative gpa of 3.4. I work as a Co-op or a so called Intern at a plant. I work under a plant engineer. I like my boss and I love my job but sometimes I feel worthless like I can not design anything. My boss tells me to design a bridge for our catwalk in our plant. I try and try to come up with ideas to make the bridge rise and lower with a pulley system and a pneumatic cylinder but my boss always says it will not work and he is probably right but I keep trying and I will never give up. So is there any sources out there that can help me design items in a plant better. Or something I can look to for Ideas because in school we do not design anything we just do math calculations. Which I like both but I need more work on designing things. Is there a book or something that I can read that will help me design things in a plant better. Or any articles that I can read to find out ideas of how things are designed in a plant.

It takes time and experience to become a good designer. You have to learn to look at a problem and a possible solution and critique it. You need to always be looking at things and understanding why they are the way they are or how you might make them better.
Take the problem of raising the catwalk. First does it have to raise or could it move laterally or even retract? Should you use a pulley, a piston, a sprocket and chain or maybe even a seesaw effect with a counterbalance.
I remember my first design problem when I graduated. It was a pump installation in an existing plant. When I look back on that design I cringe because I have learned so much more about how it should be done in the years that have passed.
Remember time and experience will do more to make you a better designer than any book will.
What are some different jobs you can do with a degree in mechanical engineering?
Aside from being a plant engineer, project engineer, etc...how can a mech. engineering degree be applied to other fields?

can you advice me project ideas based on thermal power plant for my final year engineering project?
i am a final year Btech power engineering student and i need to make a project so can you advice me project ideas based on power plant engineering and thermal power plant.
please i need them urgently.

You could design an integrated fuel ethanol distillery power plant.
Since the waste heat from a steam plant is plenty hot enough to boil ethanol/water, it should be relatively straightforward, and would have far better economics than an ethanol plant that has to buy fuel for distillation.
How to minimize hydraulic fluid leakage in a hydraulic vibration brake enough to avoid costly inspections?
Studying hydraulic casing and piston performance at the graduate lab at Yale...a few nuclear power plant engineers have requested that something like this be invented to reduce inspection-failing costs. Why isn't this possible? It sounds simple enough.

After I take my course in Thermal Hydraulics and Reactor Safety, then I will tell you.
There are a lot stresses in a reactor that are mechanical (vibrational,etc.,...), radiation, and thermal. So, there is a lot of wear in reactor components.
What are the merits and difficulties associated with taxation and trading schemes?
This question is to do with the economic instruments on controlling pollution with techniques surrounding plant engineering

Well the carbon trading program has already been found to be a worthless enterprise. The carbon credits are WORTHLESS. This only goes to show how bad the Crap and Trade program truly is.
how can i project the power demand of a certain province to 30 years?
I'm doing a power plant design project and I'm almost clueless on how am i gonna do it. Our professor didn't teach us the basics well. Do you know a site where i can learn how to do it? A publication would also do. It's a partial fulfillment for my power plant engineering course.

Simple really, research what the population growth in the region has been over the past 25 years, then project forward at similar growth rates for the next 30 to determine what the population level is likely to be in 2037/8.
Do a similar research on industry growth rates, and extrapolate the results.
Research and identify what the current power consumption per capita is in the region, allow say 8% growth for increased usage per capita, or leave as is to counter energy efficiency improvements - your choice.
Identify the power plants in your area, identify what the average MW output is from each plant, and the spinning reserve available (excluding unit standby for maintenance downtime).
Identify any plants that will be over 30 years old in 2037/8 cos they'll be up for replacement.
From your projected figures for population and industry growth you know what you're going to need in 2037/8 and from your research you know what you have now, and what will be due for replacement between now and 2037/8.
Costs per MW for new plant construction depend on whether you're going hydro, simple cycle, combined cycle, thermal or nuclear.
Easy! Good luck.
How to jump start a career in Human Resources in Houston Texas?
How to jump start a career in Human Resources in Houston Texas?
I have an MBA in Human Resources and MIS (Management Information Systems), BA in psychology. Only 4 months of experience as an HR admin (temporary assignment) and 2.5 years of experience in QA for a medical device company (just quitted the job because they wanted me to work second shift and decided to stay home with my two year old baby). It has been HARD for me to get a job in HR in Puerto Rico because they all ask for at least 3 years in HR. My husband and I are thinking that we could relocate to Cypress, TX. He is a power plant engineer and I am sure he will find a job but ...Do I stand a chance in Houston Texas or should I quit my interests and stay at home with my two year old? It is NOT easy being a mom and pursue a dream career! Do you think it is the end road for me and I have wasted my time with an MBA? Please advise and be sincere.

How much does an auto factory worker make a week in Mexico? an hourly worker, turning screws or spray painting?
I've been told they make $2 an hour. I don't' believe that, does anyone really know, how much does that Mexican worker take home in a week? Not the plant engineer or maintenance crew but the hourly worker.I know they make cars in Mexico, I saw them all lined up on the dock when on a cruise. Aren't we told the reason Business leaves the US is because our worker make too much money and the item can be made outside the US and shipped in, cheaper? How much per hour?

In Plant Engineering, who designs and develops the original Plot Plan. Plant Design Engr.belongs to which dept?
Generally refinement of the Plot Plan is done by the piping dept of the consultancy services. Original Basic Plot Plan is designed by the Plant Design Engineer. But he belongs to whom ? Client or consultant ? If consultant, then which department of consultancy services ? Plant engineering or Piping Engineering ?

Question answered by oil field trash
The control of the plot plant varies with various projects.
I have seen some where the client has very specific requirements that must be met and they retain complete control over the plot plan as they have laid it out.
In other cases the client will set a general plot plan and let the designers work out the optimum layout for cost, construction considerations and plant operations. This requires interaction between several groups.
There are other occasions where the project manager or project engineer retains control over the plot plan. This can be for various reasons such as a need to meet specific project goals regarding compliance with regulations, laws or other contractual requirements.
In my experience the plot plan design and modifications are driven by many considerations from various engineering disciplines, construction needs, operations requirements and personal preference. I have never seen the piping design as the controlling factor or group.
