These type of charges are being investigated by the courts when applied by banks - are gas suppliers any different? Also, can I charge them £14 for a letter saying I have recieved it?

According to a High Court Judge in 2005, his ruling on bank letters was that the cost of the letter had to reflect the true cost if them and he said that was about 50p to £1. Even thought this was for bank letters, I expect that if you point this out to the gas co. and refuse to pay for the letter they may change their mind. Especially if you tell them you will go to law over it. And I have billed companies back for replying to their letters at the same or greater rate than they charged me. Its amazing just what that will achieve.

How do gas/elec suppliers work?

I live in a flat, we have diffrent electricity and gas suppliers. How does this work - surely it all comes from the same pipe? How do the companies work out which gas goes to which flat? hi, i know they different utilities... Maybe I didnt phrase it right - what I meant was 1)if all the gas comes down one pipe then how do they work out which bit of gas belongs to which company. Or is that where the transporters come in? and 2) Same as above but this time for electricity! ie the electricity comes from different suppliers but it all comes out of the same wire! Oh heck - do I care now, I'm confusing myself :-) ;-)

Gas and electricity are two different utilities. Gas is in pipes. Electricity is in wires. Both use meters to register how much is used. The gas pipe that only goes to your flat goes through your meter and any gas only you use will register on that one meter. The same for electricity, only the wiring in your flat will be metered by you turning lights on and off or appliances ran.

Can they cut off your gas if you have a child?

Hi I was just wondering. Can your gas supplier cut off your supply of gas if you have a child (my daughter is 3 months old) we have actually paid the bill but they seem to think we haven't. We are sorting it out with them as we have a bank statement that we are going to print off proving payment went to them but they are threating to cut off out supply, can they actually do this? Thanks for your help!

Find that bank statement as soon as possible b/c yes they will turn it off. Same w/ electricity. They don't care if you have kids, they just want your money. I went through this w/ my electric co. one time, only I found my statement in time where I didn't get cut off. I was mad b/c I knew I paid for it and then I have someone telling me I didn't b/c someone there screwed up. They sure felt stupid when I proved them wrong.

My gas meter appears to be running backwards. What can i do about this? Are my bills now void?

I moved in to a new property recently and the landlord had just installed a new boiler. The property had a gas supply already but my flat didn't. Southern Electric installed the meter and charged me for the first month, the bill was a lot higher than expected, and i called them about it but they told me that it was right. I'm a bit confused to what this means and i don't want to be deemed as doing something illegal, also i don't want to be ripped off by my gas supplier.

If your meter is running backward, then the reading will be very high, as if it has almost done a full lap. That might explain the extra high bill, but I would expect it to be an ULTRA-HIGH bill. They may not be making a big deal of it because the DEA has been notified of hugely inflated usage, and they now have you under surveillance to see how you can possibly be using that much energy. Crop drying in the basement maybe. Have you noticed the black Fords sitting down the street? :)

To find out who your current gas supplier is, you can contact the Meter Point Number Helpline on 0870 608 152. For electric, just contact your local company and they should be able to tell you, e.g. Southern Electric if in the South East

Why have I got a final bill from Birtish Gas when using a quantum prepayment meter?

My friend has just moved from a house and has received a final bill from their gas supplier because they were using a quantum meter they were advised that this bill is because the meter was set at a lower rate than it would have been per unit used. Has anyone encountered this before if so, how was it dealt with?

Take the problem to a Citizens' Advice Bureau (if there are still any left). They should sort it out with BG over the phone. They carry a bit of clout with them.

Can an Aqua-lung air tank be converted to hold oxygen for welding?

I realize the value would have to be changed but my real question is; is it safe to make this conversion and will a welding gas supplier fill it with oxygen if I put on the proper vale?

Okay, so gas prices keep going up and up, yet the price per barrel is still not at its record high. When asked, it was due to unscheduled maintenance. So all the major gas suppliers had maintenance issues at the same time?

We do it every year. Spring is the best time to shut down. Demand is typically light, there's a gap between the end of the last and beginning of the new home heating oil seasons. There's no better time to do it.

Did using an alternative gas supplier (Michigan choice program) save you money on your utility bills?

The alternative natural gas supplier supplies the gas, you get billed through your regular utility company. What are your experiences with using an alternate gas supplier?

I recently moved to Berlin, Germany, and I was able to sign up for a gas supplier over the internet (www.gasag.de). I would like to do the same for my electricity supplier. Also phone / internet suggestions are welcome :D
