How/where to get work experience for fashion-related job?

I live in Melboune, Australia and i want to get fashion related work experience. I don't mind working at womens magazines(fashion department) or something but all the magazine offices are in sydney. Where can i get it and how?

joannaS

Question answered by livelyblueswimmer

Depends on how old you are, but a good grounding for fashion is to get a Saturday job in a decent retail environment, eg Myer, because that way you get a strong insight into what sells and what the public wants and doesn't - very useful when it comes to deciding what to put in the zine later. If you really want fashion experience - difficult at any age! - try for a job with a fashion agent or distributor to see how fashion is circulated. look at the yellow pages. or see if you can get an office job at the design college, or with a fabric printer, or at the Herald-Sun which has a big lifestyle department. Good luck!

What is the sample size used in showrooms(fashion agencies)? How to start a fashion agency?

I am starting a fashion agency and I have to organize my first order of clothing(swimming suits) overseas to import. But I do not know which size is the one commonly used in showrooms(fashion agencies). Can anyone help me please? any tips about how to start a fashion agency?

Nikita

Question answered by CindyW

I'm not sure I understand your question correctly, Fashion agencies usually are agents who take orders from buyers, on behalf of fashion/clothing companies/ manufacturers/ designers. They don't need to buy/hold/import the goods, they would have samples (in size, styles variety) from the fashion companies. They do it on commision bases. For starting a agency, you should first register for a business name with Government (in Australia, with Fair Trading Department), then attend a lot of fashion exhibitions like Fashion Expose (in Australia), make contacts with clothing manufacturers, companies, designers, importers.... It will involve a lot of work but just give it a go! Good luck!

What is the average height of male models in the best fashion shows?

Shows for Armani, Gucci, Prada, Dolce and Gabbana (particularly for fashion week) etc. It's hard to accurately estimate height just from a video or photo. Obviously they look tall but that might have a lot to do with their slander builds. But I read in several articles that a male fashion model should be 5'11" to 6'2". But isn't 5'11" too short for those shows? None of them look 5'11". Please provide examples of male models who have made it in the top runway shows at only 5'11" or 6'0" if you can.

Ethan

Question answered by Sur La Mer

According to the New York Better Business Career Services website, the preferred dimensions for a male model are a height of 5 ft 11 in (180 cm) to 6 ft 2 in (188 cm), a waist of 30–32 in (76.20–81.28 cm) and a chest measurement of 36–40 in (91.44–101.60 cm).[ Male runway models have been noted as being skinny and well toned Male and female models must also possess clear skin, healthy hair, and attractive facial features. Stringent weight and body proportion guidelines form a selective criteria by which established and would‑be models are judged for their placement suitability, on an ongoing basis—with some variation regionally and market tier-level dependent, subject, too, to current prevailing trends at any point, in any era—by agents, agencies and end-clients.

How can you become a fashion designer or model?

I'm only in 6th grade, but I have a knack for fashion. I've always wanted to be a fashion designer or model, and now's the time to make my dream come true. Please tell everything you know. If some people think my age is too young, go ahead and tell me, but this is my dream and has been for as long as I can remember. I can't get a degree since I am too young for one. So, please don't answer with "Get a degree." Everyone tells me I'm pretty enough to be a model and they tell me I should model.

Question answered by Tash

You CAN start preparing to be a model right now. Anyone who tells you differently knows not what they are talkinga bout. Clueless at best. I am guessing that you must be around the age of 11. So you can start taking care of your skin, hair, your body. Practice posing in the mirror. Modeling isn't all about being pretty. Some of the ugliest girls are very successful models and you know why because they know how to transform. How tall are you? How is your weight? Are you real, real thin? Are you atleast 5'7 for your age. Models are usually 5'8- 6 foot with some exceptions but agencies will take a girl your age who is 5'7 because she is still growing in some agencies opinions. What everyone tells you and what an agent might tell you are two totally different things my dear. If you are 5'2 right now, you might not be able to become a model. If you can get to the height of atleast 5'6 by the time you are 13 you will have a good chance, and with the right look. Whatever that is supposed to mean. Try learning all the different modeling agencies, the models and designers. What are the fashion capitals? Where do you live? Are you willing to travel? You can go to models.com for information on agencies in your city. But if you aren't in a big City you will eventually have to either live in a model house in that city and you do have to pay. I will warn you not to think you are going ot be a supermodel over night. You might not even become one at all. But you might become a supermodel at the same time. Its a real, real tough industry and it can either make you or break you. Seriously...Watch out for scams because there are a lot of scams out here waiting to prey on young girls like you so whatever you do you gotta take your parent with you. Also, remember if any agent tells you to pay or get naked RUN, RUN, RUN!!! As far as models.com, I do not recommend you joining the forums and speaking with any of the stage moms and other idoits. Don't post any pics up there either. I have NEVER in my life posted a picture up there because I don't need their approval as a source for me beginning my career like those other folks do. Trust, their UGLY daughters can say what they want about someone but when someone talks about their UGLY daughter it is a different story. So, I suggest you just go on there and search and not interact with those jobless sad people lol. This is for fashion modeling You can actually start sending out to an agency once you hit 13 years old. Okay... as for Fashion Design. You need to start drawing. Study the fashion magazines as well. Learn about Croquis, the fashion figure, whats in whats not. I recommend Fashion Sketchbook by Bina Abling and 9 Heads. There are a ton of fashioin books out here but those two ar eth eones that helped me. I have a couple of more fashion books as well but those two are the best. You can also learn to sew meanwhile. Try to find the different fashion schools F.I.T. Fashion Institute of Technology. Cheap. I take a course there now. I finished college in Business Management with a Bachelors Degree so now I am just focusing on my career. I used to go to Parsons School of Design but they are crazy expensive. If you can afford it. GO!! I love that school. Both are in New York City. You can also try FIDM in California. This is when you get older. For now, try to find different afterschool programs that are dedicated to drawing. You can also learn by yourself. A lot of designers were self taught and did not go to school. A lot of them did go to school. Its about how good you are and not where you learned and developed your skill. You are only in the 6th grade so if I were you I will just focus on learning how to draw fashion figures and clothing. I would also try a little bit of sewing but not right now. Study the magazines. You can prepare to go to a Fashion High School. I just know of Fashion Industries High School in New York City. Just focus on drawing for now and learning who the different designers are, where they went to school etc... Knowledge is power and its very impressive. Do the same thing for modeling as far as learning about the different agencies and the different models and how they got started. Some of them went from rags to riches. Some of these stories of Fashion Designers and Models are very inspirational. Its very funny how you see so many girls on America's Next Top Model talking about they want to be a Model and they know NOTHING about the Fashion Modeling Industry. They don't know any of the designers, barely any of the models. Its really sad how these girls have a distored view of the modeling industry. Who knows, if you ever become a famous model you can just use your status to have your own clothing line. I mean, I honestly don't believe its being a REAL fashion designer but at the same time you are still living out your dreams and you will be able to model your own clothing. Something I wanted to do way back when. Now I am just focusing on designing. P.S. When and if you become a model watch out for all of the pressure. There is a lot of drugs and sex and all kinds of things in this industry and its a dog eat dog industry. It can eat you up and spit you out, keep on moving like you never existed. There is a lot of back stabbing. This is for Fashion Designing too. So I just wanted you to be aware so that if anyone pressures you to do anything you are smart enough not to. No matter what. No matter what anyone promises you. Best Wishes and Good Luck!!

How can I target real estate agents in an online advertising campaign?

My goal is to buy banners on websites that real estate agents in Rockland, Orange and Westchester Counties in New York consistently visit. All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Isaac

Question answered by Jake

The Google Adwords ad network has the option for you to have your text or banner advertisements to only appear on specific web site you select, ideally these would be both local and important national reality biz sites. Keep an eye out for those google ads. Adwords also has IP address geo targeting available so you only pay for visitors from a specified area, regardless of the location of the site they are visiting. Of course the original adwords form, ads on google search results pages might work but you are limited to search phrase and geo location matching, (placing ads on industry site is more likely to attract only agents) Adwords is not the cheapest but has better targeting than some other self serve advertising. Facebook also has good demographic targeting, you can show ads to only members who have real estate interests who live in a city within a specified number of miles from yours. An ad can be setup that is only seen by people with Real Estate Agent on their Facebook page, might give a small number of results but wold be worth the money. I know there are people marketing training courses who use old fashioned post cards to reach agents, you can rent highly targeted mailing lists for roughly 10 cents a head. A search of Nextmark.com turned up "3,838 real estate ageny business mailing lists."

How much does it cost to put on a fashion show?

I am starting a fashion business this year and am looking to find out what my initial costs will be. If anyone has experience in this area could you offer me any advice?

Meldrum

Question answered by N☮Y

Really, it depends how you put into your fashion show. I'd start with about $100. This will pay for the cloth, thread, etc. needed to make the clothing. Then, there's the models. If you're going to have a few attractive friends play the parts then that saves you lots of money! You can look at fordmodels.com or any local agent sight for some aspirign models who will do it for free as well. If you aren't having any luck models can cost anywhere from $20-100 an hour! Let's say you do ten models for twenty dollars. Total: $300 Next, the place. If you plan to make a deal at a bar or restraunt with "i'll give you service if you give me space" then you can get a lot better rate. If you are having it an some extravagent place it will cost you around $500-5000 dollars. Make sure they don't try to charge you per person. That's where they get you. Let's say you do a thousand dollar room Total: 1,300 Next, transportation. You're going to need to pay for the gas, and bus service to haul everything over to the place you are planning to have your show. And if you need extra storage you may need to rent one of those "mini storage" things. Transport Services cost around $40-80. Mini storage I'm gonna guess around $100. You get a $50 car and a $100 storage. Total : 1,450 Theirs catering. You always need food. Good food is going to cost you about $150-4000 depending on how many people and the type of food. I'm guessing there will be lots of people. Let's go 3,000 Total: 4,450 Entertainment/Music/Lights. Lights are pretty cheap. You can rent spot lights can strobes for around $20-50. Music can be $500 for a DJ. And if you were planning a themed show and having a circus come or something that would cost you about $700-3000 dollars. You get 5 $30 lights and a $500 DJ and a $1000 dollar entertainment. Total: 6,100 Hair and Makeup artists can be expensive or cheap. $40-300 each. I'll give some tips about picking them out below. And if you have any other necesities like gift baskets or give aways expect another 1,000. Four $50 hair stylists and necesities. Total: 7,300 So, you can seee a good show is going to cost a lot. .I'd reccomend a lot of sponsoring from different companies and check out some beauty schools for people that would love to try their "talents" on real people.. good luck help with mine? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100310142844AAa00rT
