Suppose a drought destroys farm crops and drives up the price of food. What is the effect on the short-run trade-off between inflation and unemployment.
Zully
Question answered by Charles
inflation would rise
employment would rise because of the pay off in unemployment insurance
the inflation in farm and crop supplies and fertilizers and feeds would not increase or decrease but would rather stay the same because of stagnant or non- existant sales.
What is the exchange rate of Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen of farm crops compared to trees.?
Just curious about the practice of clearing rain forest for agricultural purposes and how much oxygen is produced by farm crops or the forested areas. Basically, is it a valid argument?
Mike
Question answered by bravozulu
It depends on the crops. Some would produce the same amount of oxygen and absorb the same CO2. Most of the crops are rotated so there is not much net loss of CO2 except what they harvest. That usually gets converted into CO2 within a year also.
That really doesn't apply to the rain forest though. The farming only lasts a few years because the temperature is too hot for much soil and there is usually too much rainfall. You can only farm it for a few years and the nutrients run out. When they cut it down and use slash and burn agriculture the forest isn't going to come back anytime soon. Then there will be much less photosynthesis and sequestration of carbon. It is destructive to the forest and the land.

Suppose a drought destroys farm crops and drives up the price of food. What is the effect on the short-run trade-off between inflation and unemployment? How do AS&AD and Phillips curves shift?

Question answered by SDD
None if the money supply is fixed. The higher prices for food will simply reduce demand for other categories of consumption.
A question about farming crops in buildings?
Do you think that farming crops inside of a building is a good idea, or nah!
I looked at a building on tv that was growing corn. The corn was in big stainless steel boxes, 5 rows high where they used fiber optics, backed up with lights on cloudy days, to bring light to the corn.
Seemed like an interesting idea. I am sure that there are pros, and cons, even with that.
Do you think that this may be the "farms" of the future?

Question answered by cbsteh
Farming inside buildings is not new. These buildings are called greenhouses or glasshouses. Crops are very often planted using the hydroponics or aeroponics system where water instead of soil is used as a growing media. The idea is to control the environment in which the crop grows so that the crop is given the optimal conditions in terms of microclimate (e.g., air temperaure, humidity, and light) and nutrient (e.g., nutrient type, amount, and application timing).
What is new is "vertical farming" where instead of having many single storey greenhouses, we stacked these buildings into a tower. The idea of such vertical farms is to circumvent some common problems faced in food supply, namely:
- lack of agriculture land area within cities, so glasshouses are stacked into towers
- bringing food closer to people in the cities since increasingly more people now reside in cities
- increasing local food supply and reducing food import
And because food is closer to the people, fuel (transportation) is saved and storage time and space are reduced.
However, the challenges of vertical farming are such as:
- amount of light is more difficult to control without relying on artificial lighting
- source of renewable energy (for electricity) to run the farming activities within the tower
- difficulty in coupling or integrating the various farming components in the building into a self-reliant or closed system.
advantages and disadvantages of intensive farming crops?
I am stuck on some home work pleases could you help?
advantages and disadvantages of intensive farming crops?
what are the:
advantages,
disadvantages
and what do they control?
Abby
Question answered by Tamara
ADVANTAGES-
1-MINIMUM USE OF MODERN EQUIPMENTS.
2-LOW COST
3-MORE EMPLOYMENT
4- HIGH YIELD
5- LESS EXPENSIVE
6- MORE ECONOMICAL
7- LARGE PRODUCTIVITY OF FOOD IS POSSIBLE WITH LESS AMOUNT OF LAND
DISADVANTAGES-
1- NO NEW LAND IS AVAILABLE FOR CULTIVATION IN INTENSIVE FARMING.
2-FERTILITY DECREASES AS THE AGRICULTURE IS DONE ON THE SAME LAND.
3-THICKLY POPULATED AREA IS FED WITH THIS PIECE OF LAND.
4- USE OF FERTILIZERS CAUSE IMPACT ON ECOLOGY
5- AFFECT NATURAL HABITAT OF ANIMALS
6- THESE CROPS CONTAINS INVISIBLE PESTICIDES
Intensive farming involves genetic selection and breeding of both plants and animals. Artificial growth hormones and inorganic plant nutrients are mixed with the fertilizers and livestock feed. This results in the highest yield of all time. On one side, the health of human beings is largely affected by intensive farming, while on the other side, it is argued that the poor and needy cannot simply afford organic food. Compared to the disadvantages, the advantages of intensive farming are less.
CONTROL:
Biological control is an alternative to using pesticides. By releasing a natural predator into the crop growing area, the number of pests can be reduced. This can have unforeseen consequences as the numbers of different organisms in the food web are changed.
Is there a practical use for wheat or corn crops devastated by flood waters?
Due to the recent flooding of Cedar Rapids area, many farm crops are devastated. A posting on a forum I read said this is a total loss. Is it? The crops cannot be used for human comsumption but can it be used for ethanol, fuel or ANYTHING else? I'm a city slicker so I don't know much about farming but know enough to estimate this crop loss is on a massive scale. Thank you for your time and patience.

Question answered by Harshal
No . The condition of the crops described is such that it MAY not be useful even for Ethanol production .
The only practical use is to plow it back in the field ; allow to rot or decompose completely and treat it as a Green manure ,
Or make a compost manure also called organic fertilizer .
In this way the organic matter will be reused .

How many chickens does a farm usually have?
How many chickens does a chicken or regular farm (crop growing farm) normally have at a time?
Mercy
Question answered by Sarah
Very few "regular" farms have chickens anymore. If they do it is probably just 10 or so, just like most backyard chicken keepers. It's just not economically viable for small time farmers to keep chickens to sell to the public anymore, if they have them it is just for the family. A broiler chicken farm will have groups of several thousand and keep them for about 8 weeks before slaughter. A layer chicken farm can also have thousands of birds but will keep them for up to 2 years.
What are your thoughts on corporate welfare, subsidies, and bank bailouts?
Also should the government subsidize farm crops?
The fed up matthew™
Question answered by Paul Grass™
My thoughts are government is not empowered to bailout any one , any corporation nor even a farm, that it needs to be restrained to its basic constitutional duties! God Bless
Is the fuction of the heart more goal directed than the function of the rain?
All things are goal-directed systems. Consider why it would it be reasonable for "The function of the heart is to pump blood" is true whereas "The function of the rain is to provide farm crops with water" is rejected.
Robin
Question answered by vintagegirl21
i think the farm crops one is rejected because, unlike the heart whose main function is to pump blood, the main function of rain is not only for farm crops. it does provide them with water, but it is not its priority. it's just one of the many things rain is good for.
just an opinion.
What is the video game series, "Harvest Moon" all about?
Is it about farming crops or watching moons eclipse? Add detail to your answer. Talk about what the game is like and what you can do.

The early games have, essentially, the same plot line: raise a healthy farm, get married, and have a child. Each setting is a rural one, separated from the mainland. There's not a lot of technology - there's a couple TVs, telephones, etc, but not very much more than that. No cars, cell phones, etc.
The first few games, you can only play as a male, and you have a handful of girls with different personalities to choose from as far as marriage goes. You can plant crops, raise farm animals and pets alike, pretty much whatever you want to do. There's fishing, festivals, and character events in each game.
As the series progresses, the games change a little bit. The newest ones have completely individual plots, and many have new casts of characters. You can play as a boy or a girl in most of the newer ones.
Examples:
HM: A Wonderful Life [Gamecube]: Your story progresses by chapters. You have to get married at the end of the first year, and you have a child by the second. Your house grows year by year. There are only three girls to choose from. However, this is one of the only games where your child reaches full maturity. He grows a little every "chapter." Each chapter consists of something like 40 game days, 10 in each season.
You CAN:
Do traditional activities (mine, fish, cook, farm)
Make new variations of seeds.
Upgrade your farm buildings.
And more!
(There is a female version called Another Wonderful Life.)
HM: Sunshine Islands {Nintendo DS]: You collect Sun Stones by doing various tasks - catching so many fish, befriending people, finding them in places, etc. The Sun Stones raise other places to explore - for example, if you have done enough to collect 5 Sun Stones, you can raise an island. This is similar to Island of Happiness, but a different setting and different objective. The farming in this game is a little harder; there are Sun and Water points you have to worry about in order to get the best crops.
You CAN:
Marry and raise a family, but you don't have to.
Play as a boy or a girl.
Do traditional activities (mine, fish, cook, farm)
Upgrade your house and farm buildings.
And more!
[Alternate game: Island of Happiness (build bridges with money in order to access new areas)]
HM: Tree of Tranquility {Nintendo Wii}: An entirely different cast of characters from previous games. You have to complete "rainbows" by finding ingredients around the island in order to return full glory and accessibility to the entire island. For example, until you complete the first Rainbow, you cannot take the ferry to the other island, etc. The Mother Tree, the source of life on the island, has been dying, and needs help to be restored.
You CAN:
Marry and raise a family.
Do traditional activities (mine, fish, cook, farm)
Upgrade your house and farm buildings.
Work part-time jobs for more money.
Start a new game as your child, with all of your assets like money and upgraded.
And more!
HM: Animal Parade {Nintendo Wii}: You have to ring 5 Bells in order to get the Harvest Lord's attention. Each Bell has a different objective, and a different task for you to complete. Tree of Tranquility's sister game. It has the same characters, essentially, with the addition of a couple bachelor/ettes.
You CAN:
Get married and raise a family, but you don't have to.
Do traditional activities (mine, fish, cook, farm)
Upgrade your house and farm buildings.
Work part-time jobs for more money
Start a new game as your child, with all of your assets like money and upgraded.
And more!
Or, if monster fighting is more up your alley, there's a game called Rune Factory, which is a fantasy Harvest Moon {for the Nintendo DS}. You can go to different caves, fight some monsters, tame others and let them help you around your farm, etc. You can also upgrade your weapons, farm, and marry/woo different girls.
It's kind of hard to detail every single game when there's a good twelve or more in the series. Each one is a little different - some are a LOT different - and all are well worth playing.
