What's the difference between biomechanical and mechanical engineering?
In terms of courses I would have to take in college. I am currently a freshman listed as a mechanical engineer, but I think I'm more interested in biomechanical. My school does not offer biomechanical as a discipline, however, so is it possible to get a degree in mechanical and still work in a biomechanical field? Any advice from currently practicing engineers would be great!

Accepted Manuscripts are peer-reviewed research papers that have been accepted for publication by the Editor of an ASME Transactions journal and posted online in a citable form in advance of the copyedited version of record.
Publication of Accepted Manuscripts is part of ASME’s commitment to provide the latest scientific research as soon as possible online. The service is aimed at benefiting authors, readers, and researchers, by decoupling the availability of the research from the production requirements of archival publication.
Accepted Manuscripts are a modified version of the pre-production, author-supplied PDFs of an accepted paper.

You can try India International Marketing Company, also known as IIMC Machines, based in Mayapuri Industrial Area in New Delhi. They have really good quality lathe machines. I bought one machine from them in 2007 and its still working amazing, then i again bought 5 machines in 2011 and now i plan to buy another 6, the brand name is AMT Lathe Machine. I also bought a milling and a shaper from them which are also really good.
As far as the pricing is concerned, the price is also good. I think the most important thing in machine tools is the service back-up and i am really happy with there back up. In case of any break-down or spare parts requirement, we just have to make a call and they send there service engineer within 24 hours.
I think you can get further details from there wesbite http://www.iimc-india.com/
I hope you find the right machine.
Can I own a business doing AutoCAD for companies with out being an engineer?
I am starting a company doing more or less freelance AutoCAD work for companies like Welders, Capenters/stair railers, fabrication shops, custom machine shops, and some Architectul related work. And if theres any in depth requirements regarding Architectul i work with an Architect that would approve my drawings.
If you also have any suggestions feel free to leave some!

If you want to work with architect's, it's a tough market with tremendous competition coming from China, India, Eastern Europe and Mexico. I've found competent companies who provide quality CAD services and project management in China and Serbia. At the current US rates for qualified drafting, ($50/hour), you can get rates from $2-12/hour in those other countries. I'm not saying not to go on this venture, I'm just reminding you to be realistic. Do you have a working business plan? How do you plan to get projects? You will have some upstart cost such as software, AutoCAD $4500, Photoshop $600, Microsoft Office $300, Google SketchUP $600. It's crazy to start a business without legal software. It also looks as if REVIT will become a major component in commercial architectural practice. The hardware to run REVIT is much more dedicated, you will need a quality graphics card $1000.
What is common among all disciplines of engineering?
That is, what makes an "engineer" an "engineer" regardless of the work done?

Question answered by Bramble
The purpose of engineering is to devise, design and provide machines, devices, vehicles, systems, structures or facilities which improve, maintain or defend the material living standard of humans and (in some instances) to make available the technical expertise and services necessary to operate and maintain these.
Persons engaged in the basic techniques and technicalities of any of the above are generally engineers and this engagement provides a general definition of engineering as a profession.
The common contention that engineers are "problem solvers" totally fails to shed any revealing light upon their role. So also are shopkeepers, cleaners, doctors, nurses, lawyers, housewives, postmen, builders, taxi drivers, hotel staff, road menders, bar tenders, refuse collectors, prostitutes, police and even (sometimes) politicians - just about any employed person apart from entertainers is a problem solver, unless absence of amusement is a problem!

Mechanical engineers design and develop everything you think of as a machine - from supersonic fighter jets to bicycles to toasters. And they influence the design of other products as well - shoes, light bulbs and even doors. Many mechanical engineers specialize in areas such as manufacturing, robotics, automotive/transportation and air conditioning. Others cross over into other disciplines, working on everything from artificial organs to the expanding field of nanotechnology. And some use their mechanical engineering degree as preparation for the practice of medicine and law. The mechanical engineer may design a component, a machine, a system or a process. Mechanical engineers will analyze their design using the principles of motion, energy, and force to insure the product functions safely, efficiently, reliably, and can be manufactured at a competitive cost.
Mechanical engineers work in the automotive, aerospace, chemical, computer, communication, paper, and power generation industries. Mechanical engineers will be found in virtually any manufacturing industry. Increasingly, mechanical engineers are needed in the environmental and bio-medical fields. Indeed virtually every product or service in modern life has probably been touched in some way by a mechanical engineer.
Is it possible to get a canvas retractable awning serviced in Sydney?
We have five metre awning - and its torn, and the retractable arms are drooping - but to replace it will cost 6k plus - and I am sure that it just needs new canvas and some servicing. But everyone I talk to simply wants to sell me a new one. Anyone know anyone who services damaged awnings. We are in Sydney's north. Thank you!

no im on the other side on the world, but this is something you could fix yourself, evidentally though you dont feel you could or you wouldnt be asking. despite this you might consider looking into outdoor fabric which is expensive especially canvas but its only a fraction of 6k. and the arms are usually held in place by pivot which could be squeezed in more as this is common. even a weld if its not a retractable.
now to look for someone i would search for a maintenance mechanic or mechanical engineer(more expensive) familiar with many mechanical systems usally found servicing everything from the machines to the curtains in industrial plants and someone local might be willing to assist. another would be landscape contractors that have experience in these. and finally i would look into purchasing parts or a new one online even ebay as it will be much cheaper. now i know this doesnt address your direct question but im just trying to be helpful and inform you that there are other options for a solution. good luck
sure its a machine and as such it can be repaired in one form or another. and the asker should be looking for you to help them. i also noticed you did mention it is a retractable so a pinch or weld wont work as he stated, sorry i didnt realize that before. so at this point you might be looking at reinforcement if its drooping which would have to be done without interfering with the retraction mechanism. and if you do replace the canvas you might have to cut it and then reweld it just to get it on, as the final assembly might be made to where you cant simply disassemble it. it all depends on the engineering used by the manufacturer and whether they intended on it being able to be replaced. also remember that its likely its made out of aluminum so it will take more than a typical arc welder.
its obvious that to repair this it will take someone skilled in mechanics which i why i originally suggested you look for some kind of maintenance mechanic who can assess the problem and come up with a solution just as they do everyday on any machine in the factory that requires it. and being unfamiliar with that particular manufacturers building techniques and styles i cant assist more.
remember just as with any mechanism contraption or machine it can be repaired even if it requires serious surgery and mutiple parts replacement ,so it depends on the persons level of resourcefulness and mechanical aptitude. either way i would think with a simple retractable awning you could find someone that is willing to help for much much less than 6k

An engineer is a professional practitioner of engineering, concerned with applying scientific knowledge, mathematics and ingenuity to design and develop solutions for technological systems problems. Engineers design materials, structures, machines and systems while considering the limitations imposed by practicality, safety and cost. The word engineer is derived from the Latin root ingenium, meaning "cleverness".
A technician is generally someone in a technological field who has a relatively practical understanding of the general theoretical principles of that field, e.g., as compared to an engineer in that field. They are generally much more versed in technique compared to the average layman, or even the professional in that field. A mid-level of understanding of theory, and a high-level of technique, is generally mastered by the technician in order to become expert in a specific tool domain. This may be part of a larger (production) process. Technicians may be classified as either skilled workers or semi-skilled workers.
In your case, you want to be a technician.

Yes, *BUT* (and this is a big BUT) you would probably not get much architectural work, and my opinion your business would fail in the long run.
You could design things like non critical widgets for machine shops or parts for machinery without issue. Ask yourself if you would you get enough of this work to keep you afloat? You could even do houses if you have everything designed to housing code... but why would a client want to risk a lawsuit using your service if something failed when they could easily just select another company without that worry.
The happy medium would be to hire an engineer to review your work as a "team".

It will probably cost more to get a lawyer involved. BBB won't get involved in an employment situation. He should have gotten a contract. If he did not, he's probably screwed. If this employer is screwy, he'll go down in time.
