Recommendations for conservation work in the amazons?
i am taking a gap year in 2009 and want to take part in a variety of conservation projects, mainly in the Amazons of Brazil, but also general travelling.
Has anyone done any projects there, or any abroad they would really reccomend.
I want to do a lot of hands on work, and love animals, so an animal sanctuary would also be great.
I only really want advise from people who have done projects, as you can never be certain.
Thanks

Hi Charlotte,
We're involved in many Renewable Energy, Self-Sustainability, RE-forestation and Animal Protection Projects. Currently we're working in Southern Mexico (Tulum), Central America (Roatan) and "may" have something this Summer in Peru.
For more info or passed projects pics and overviews go to www agua-luna com
You're welcome to join us either here on our 100% Self-Sufficient Ranch or abroad as a Sustainable Intern or Impact Team Volunteer.
In the meantime here’s some more info on our Internship Program…
We volunteer sustainable home building projects in needing countries, and offer an internship program where the interns can help out also, if you’re interested. Go to www agua-luna com if to find out more.
The Agua-Luna Internship program is open to anyone with an interest in sustainability / alternative energy and a willingness to work hard. People of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to sign up.
Internships are unpaid positions. Interns are responsible for providing their own accommodations, food, transportation, supplies, etc. or primitive camping and meals are available at no charge on-site.
During the session interns may attend any scheduled on-site workshops and seminars. Upon completion of the session interns receive a Certificate of Clean Green Building, and the new found skills of environmental construction.
Each session will start with a brief orientation meeting at the AguaLuna Visitors Center. This will include a small tour of the AguaLuna Ranch, projects and potential work sites, showing a few finished projects as well as the job site where you will show up for work at 9 am the next day.
Expect to be challenged physically and mentally, to work hard and play hard. Some have found it difficult to be away from their homes and jobs for a month. Please come prepared to support yourself for the entirety of your stay. Also, please keep in mind you will be working on a construction site.
I’d be willing to sponsor you personally, if you feel your up for it and it sounds like something you’d be interested in. feel free to visit the site for more info, you can contact me directly threw the site.

I want to work and contribute in the environmental sector. How can I become a pro like ECO consultant etc?
Environmental Control Officer (ECO) Consultant
MukS
Question answered by Kellee
Most consultants require 3 to 10 years of technical work experience with a background in detailed technical project work in commercial and institutional buildings.
Experience with quantitative energy and water use analysis, EnergyStar label program, and/or knowledge experience with building energy modeling process and energy analysis will also be helpful.
Ability to read, understand, and navigate a set of building plans and specifications as well as a working knowledge and demonstrated experience in building design and/or construction.Direct knowledge of HVAC systems/controls, energy conservation, indoor air quality management, water resource management, and/or sustainable design will most likely be required.
Good Luck!
What can you do with an Environmental Sciences major?
Okay, so - my main goal is to do something to help the world/people/animals (like many people!) I considered becoming a doctor, but I am not sure that's for me. (Making decisions is not my strong point!) So, I have considered an environmental sciences major. Would this be practical? Would environmental engineering be better? ANY suggestions? I am interested in stuff like the Peace Corps.
The only problem with engineering is I don't really care how things work... I want to go out and make a difference.

I'm interested in the whole, forensics thing. I like researching and experiments. I like to learn about the body system; Solar system, animals, environment, practically, everything to do with science i love. So, I was just wondering, what jobs involve a lot of research and things like that. I was thinking about a marine biologist. Forensic scientist. Or anything along those lines, Any suggestions are appreciated.

what's the biggest barrier of industrial energy efficiency?
and also the legal, financial, and social incentives for moving toward energy efficiencies.barriers being legal incentives, financial incentives, and social incentives and tell me which of these drivers are most important in adopting energy efficiencies in industries :)
steffi c
Question answered by Brandt
The biggest issue is that companies don't tend to focus on industrial energy efficiency projects. This is really due to a couple issues:
-Expansion projects are much more exciting.
-A lot of energy consultants do a bad job showing how much the business will benefit with energy conservation projects.
I spend a lot of time helping companies cut their energy consumption, and a good part of that is "translating" the green and sustainable benefits into ROI, risk, payback, etc....In other words, the language that business men speak.
What jobs are available in the field of geology? How much do they make?
Victor Z
Question answered by edith clarke
Positions according to a few universities (wages according to US Dept of Labor):
Many professional geology positions require a master’s degree. However, students with undergraduate geology degrees have been very successful obtaining jobs with environmental consulting firms, state environmental regulatory agencies, and county land conservation departments. One additional year of education courses can lead to a secondary education certificate. A graduate degree prepares students for additional careers with energy companies (oil, gas, coal), mining companies (gold, silver, copper, aggregate), federal/state geological surveys, museums, and universities. Some students have gone on to law school and specialized in environmental law.
What are some entry-level jobs held by Geology graduates?
*Geologist: (May 2004 per hour: Geological and petroleum technicians $19.35)
*GIS Specialist (May 2004: Average Salary Range: $23,600 and $40,100)
Plus Other entry-level positions:
Environmental Consultant
Environmental Technician
Hydrogeologist
Hydrologist, State Dept of Natural Resources
Assistant Professor, State Department of Civil and Enviornmental Engineering
Environmental Lawyer, Law Firm
Hydrogeologist
Petroleum Logging Engineer
Pollution Control Specialist, State Dept. of Transportation
Research Scientist, U.S. EPA
Potential Job Titles for Geology majors with a graduate degree*:
Environmental Lawyer*
Geological Engineer*
Geophysicist*
Mining Geologist*
Petroleum Geologist*
Physical Oceanographer*
University Professor*
Volcanologist*
*Requires graduate degree
Good luck!

Question answered by Agua-Luna.Com -I LIVE OFF GRID-
Let me start off by saying we (my family and I) live 100% off of the grid and are completely self-sufficient with a 0% Carbon footprint. I believe this is the first step anyone can make “help the environment”. Once you convert your own life style to a greener more eco friendly route, you can start helping others.
my home has all the comforts listed above plus some. we live very comfortable without effecting the environment. just saying that tolet you know it's possible. you may not want to go as extreme as me and my family but anywhere in between is something.
Without getting to in depth here, Using alternative fuels in your vehicles and harnessing your own electricity from the sun, water, earth and wind are the 2 are key elements in making a green transition and erasing your carbon footprint.
here's a calculator to find out how much of a green impact your making (carbon footprint)
http://www.conservation.org/act/live_green/carboncalc
if you'd like to make your next step feel free to contact me personally at www agua-luna com
I've been installing home made Solar panels. Solar stoves, Solar batch and inline hot water heaters. Solar radiant heating. Solar home heating and AC, along with home made wind gens and other alternative energy items for the last 3 years.
You can even make the above projects on site with simple parts from the local hardware stores or auto stores or junk yards. For more info check out some guides I wrote / compiled on how to DIY www agua-luna com
Again these projects can be accomplished anywhere by anyone.
if you absolutely can't do anything in your home at least you can put alternative fuels in your car. most major automotive manufacturers (Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors, etc) recommend the use of bio fuels, and nearly every car manufacturer in the world approves ethanol blends in their warranty coverage.
In fact your probably even driving an ethanol car and didn't even know it.
The trick is finding fuel.
I've been producing biofuel for about 3 years now, it's not extremely difficult. Basically you need general household ingredients, a processor (or still for ethanol) and some used oil. Blend it, let separate, screen and use. I complied a guide a while back to help walk you threw the process step by step, just email me or check out..
www agua-luna com
as for recyling the best way i've found without taking money from your won pocket is to join a free freecycle group in your area or visit the habitat for humanity.
If you’d like help in making your self sufficient steps, feel free to contact me directly. I’ve written several how-to DIY guides available at www agua-luna com
on the subject. I also offer online and on-site workshops, seminars and internships to help others “help the environment”.

What are some examples of the 'green collar' jobs that Clinton/Obama refer to?
Often Imitated, NEVER Duplicated
Question answered by ghouly05
Building wind mills, power generators that use waves, and other tecnology jobs that are building things to harness nature to generate power.
Green collar workers include professionals such as conservation movement workers, environmental consultants, environmental or biological systems engineers, green building architects, holistic passive solar building designers, solar energy and wind energy engineers, green vehicle engineers, organic farmers, environmental lawyers, ecology educators, and ecotechnology workers. They also include vocational or trade-level employment: electricians who install solar panels, plumbers who install solar water heaters, and construction workers who build energy-efficient green buildings, wind power farms, or other clean, renewable, sustainable future energy development workers could all be considered green jobs.
