How to get more comfort with drains after double masectomy?

My sister had surgery four days ago. She has two drains coming out of the incision. The incision itself is not painful, but the area where the drains come out of the body is really uncomfortable. She is taking vicadon, but it is still pretty painful. Anyone have tips for how to ease this pain?

Hi Shelley L, I would love to have you around when I am not well. I am NOT condescending but pointing out the fact that you are a very caring person. Speak with the nurse caring for your sister. Let the Nurse know that the drains are hurting because they are being tugged when your sister moves. Request the nurse to secure the drains firmly. This will be more comfortable for your sister. Drains usually come out on day two or three - depending upon the amount of discharge that is coming out of them.

We need to have some drains relined. How do I chose a good drain operator from a cowboy?

We need to have some drains relined and one drain under a man hole cover repaired as it is beginning to collapse. How do I chose a good drain operator from a bad one? Is there any such thing as a federation of drainliners? How much about should these things cost? We are in North London/ Hertfordshire should anyone have a particular recommendation. Thanks

The cost will vary from company to company (or contractor to contractor). I don't know if Drains are regulated, I'm sure they are! You could telephone your Council and ask them, or you could try using the service from Rated People at http://www.ratedpeople.com/ - I'm currently using it to find a company to do plumbing and insulating on my house! You input all the details, they then get in touch with you, and you pick the best deal. Seems they have some Rated contractors in drainage already: http://www.ratedpeople.com/find/drainage-specialists Good luck!

Shelly, I know first hand about this since I had a bi-lateral mastectomy. She's not feeling pain because the nerves have been cut I had mine done 1yr ago and it's till numb. The drainage tubes were taken out 3 weeks after surgery. On one side, I swelled with fluid so bad it was like the skin was stretched beyond what it should have been. My Oncologist had to drain it himself. It felt good to have that gone and there was a lot The incision will not hurt because like I said, the nerves have been cut. I don't know when I will get the feeling back. It's kind of aggravating when it itches, but what am I going to do but live with it. To answer your question, yes, it will be uncomfortable but it gets better of course when the tubes come out. Does she have to measure and drain it herself then write it down? Look at it this way,,,she no longer has cancer. Isn't that better> She will get better God bless ADD I really didn't tell you how she can make herself more comfortable. Tell her to use warm compresses on the areas for about 10-15 min followed by ice for the same amount of time. My Oncologist told me this. The ice will keep the swelling down and when you use heat, ice should always follow. It does help a lot. Sorry I didn't address the real issue Dave is right, Percocet is much stronger than Vicodin. Her Dr can always give her extra strength Vicodin or change to Percocoet it if it's not working. She has to speak up though, I was on Percocet. that too comes in extra strength, I hope she feels better soon. Be blessed, both of you

Washer smells and drains spit and gurgle with laundry loads the same rotten egg smell?

When I do laundry, when the washer drains my bathroom sink spits and bathtub drain gurgles and there is a horrible rotten egg smell. I cut back on laundry soap and fab softener and the stinch is still lingering. Have also tried the septic treatments and nothing has worked. Have tried to check the drain vents but doesn't looked clogged. You can hear the gurgling outside also from the vents. What is going on with my draining system? HELP ME!

Question answered by jameshelwig_2000

The rotten egg smell is hydrogen sulfide. Do you smell it at any other water source? (kitchen sink, etc.). If not, then the source is the hot water heater, it's possible the anode rod requires replacement. If you do have the rotten egg smell at your other water locations, the only cure is to have a filtration system installed, which usually consists of 3 separate tanks installed at the exterior of the house, the tanks are a bleach injecting tank (usually 15 gal. - bleach removes hydrogen sulfide and red water iron), a 42 gallon mixing tank and a final filtration tank. This type of system is sold at Sears. If you only have the smell at the washer drain, try doing a weeks worth of laundry (do several loads) using ONLY cold water and see if the problem goes away (the smell.....the poor draining is another issue). If the cold water solves the problem, you have 2 choices: 1. use only cold water for clothes washing 2. Replace the HW heater. The poor draining is entirely a different issue. There is a blockage in this particular branch drain - have it professionally routed out by a reliable plumber or drain cleaning company. Obviously, if this is the only drain you have problems with, a blockage is the answer. On the other hand, if you are experiencing poor drainage throughout the house, have the septic tank checked, it may require pumping out.

I live in a mobile home and all my drains are backing up into each other. Advice please?

When I do laundry or do dishes or shower, the toilets bubble and the sinks fill up with water. And I live in a mobile home so all the drains are connected but I have been living here for like 6 months and it just started happening. If anyone could give me advice or had this same problem that would be amazing.

Question answered by lordreflexis

Are you in a mobile home park, or on your own land, is the system plumbed to a city main or is it septic? if you hooked into a city main then you need to rent a power snake and snake all the drains you can rent one from most home depots or equipment rental stores for about 40-50 bucks for 4 hrs vs a plumber charging you 300 for 15 minutes worth of work. If you have septic tank it may be full, they don't last forever and are suppose to have chemicals to break down the materials there. If your in a mobile home park then you may have to go through them the owner of the park or at least ask them, Do you own it the mobile ? or are you renting it if renting its the landlords problem to fix in most cases unless you signed a lease stating otherwise. Also all drain, are connected to a main pipe Generally when only one drain is slow or plugged, the others work fine its only the one drain But since all your drains are backing up then the main drain pipe is plugged. A power snake would be the only solution in the latter case either you rent one which is the cheapest and easiest route, what ever you do don't pour chemicals like drain-o its an acid and will eat the pipes as well and will cost you major money down the road in plumbing replacement a power snake 100ft is easy to use just don't put it down the toilet drain it scratch the hell out of it. The easiest drain to access it the washer machine drain, or you either have to take about the P-trap assembly under your bath sink tube or kitchen sink hope it helps Lr

How to clean the water drains in my house?

I want to clean out the drains in my house... the washing machine drain, the dishwasher drain, the tub & sink drains. What would you recommend using to do this? I want to do it myself if possible. They are not clogged, yet. I want to keep them from becoming clogged! Thanks for any help &/or tips!

Question answered by Peter W

If they are not clogged, have never been clogged, and there are no signs of them becoming clogged, you are doing everything right enough not to have to worry about it. On the other hand, if you wash down large amounts of grease, you have poor pitch on the lines, they clog on a regular basis or they drain slowly, your best bet is to get them jetted out by a professional, and then contract this work on a regular basis as a preventive measure. If you choose this option, you will have to have the jetting done all the way to the main sewer in the street, at whatever distance that is from your house for it to be effective. And if it does clog, before you do anything, have it scanned (with a camera) to make sure you do not have a mechanical problem (collapse, roots, crack or similar damage). But, to reiterate: Don't waste your time, money or worry on something that is not yet and shows no sign of becoming a problem.

Is there a natural way to unclog my drains?

I have used a plunger, and bleach, and I would rather not go out and get a chemical draining fluid because thats even more chemicals and exspensive. Is there another way i can unclog my drains? They are all making noises when one is clogged or being used, which means they must all connect in my tiny apartment and the clog is in the middle of the drain.

Had a slow drain in my house last year. I handled it this way: Used a plunger to loosen things up and poured boiling hot water down the drain (from the stove). Poured vinegar down the drain and let it sit overnight (it is inexpensive and eco-friendly so why not?). Followed up with an enzyme drain treatment for a week. Less than $10 and 20 minutes invested. Drain is clear... to this day even.

What could it mean if all of your home's drains are backing up?

Our bathrooms are all on the east wing of our home & the kitchen, utility room, & wetbar are on the west, but every drain is backing up. Every time drains have backed up, it's only been on whatever particular wing of the house it's on & has never been on both. I live in North Texas (heavy clay soils) & am connected to the city's sewage system (no septic system). Very worried! Please advise?

Question answered by I Like Stories

Your slow drains are most likely the result of clogging inside your house. Various things can cause a blockage at where your drain pipes merge together inside the house. Say something small like a hair clip got hung up on a corner in a pipe, then hair and other gunk clings to that. Unless your handy with a drain snake, I'd suggest getting the rotorooter guy to come snake them for you. Watch what he does, because it's pretty simple once you see how it's done. They will probably cost about $100-$150 range to come snake out a drain and offer advise.

In my 2nd floor bathroom all drains are clogged, this happened all at once. What is the problem?

The sink drains very slowly. The toilet does not want to flush the water down and the most worrisome thing is when you do flush, the toilet water is coming up through the drain in the tub!

You need to call a plumber some one may dropped something in the toilet and flushed it down the drain.

What causes a bathtub to drain very slowly when it rains?

My master bath tub/shower drains very slowly when it rains. I have tried drano and a a heavy duty drain cleaner before and the heavy duty worked some. I've cleaned hair out of it. But when it rains it just takes forever for it to drain. I'm assuming maybe a broke pipe but don't want to hire a plumber if I don't have to. I am a single level home on a concrete foundation. City sewer system. This morning I left and water was still draining very slow in tub and I left with the dishwasher going. When I got home this evening the tub was dirty and had some food particles in it. Oh and the hallway bathtub doesn't drain slow and is clean tonight.

Question answered by Andy

So it drains faster when it's not raining outside? That's pretty strange. Is the tub on the ground floor? or second floor? Are you on town sewer or do you have a septic system?
