A few years ago when my children were a bit younger, I had normally 4 to 5 domestic staff in the home. But now, currently, I only have two (2) because the workload at home are now considerably a lot easier and no more children to take care. My two staff consists of a man and a woman, the man for cleaning the house and surroundings and also tending my plants and in helping me cultivate orchid and bonsai plants while the woman takes care of grocery shopping, laundry, cooking and other miscellaneous activities in the house. They both eat at the house and the woman sleeps in it while the man goes home to his family.
I first hired domestic staff after I gave birth to my son.
Have a pleasant day.
How was an English Manor House c1850 staffed?
I am setting a short story and I just need to find details of domestic staff in this century for a small manor house. Help

Question answered by Louise C
There would probably be quite a large number of servants in even a small manor house. At the top of the hierarchy of servants there would be a butler and possibly a housekeeper as well (large households generally had both, smaller households might have only one or the other). There would be several maids, housemaids who did most of the housework, parlormaids who did most of the waiting on the family. The kitchen of course would be ruled by the cook, and she would have a scullery maid to help her, perhaps more than one if it was a large household. There might be footmen as well as the butler. There would probably be a boy to clean the boots and shoes. The master of the house might have a valet, who was his own personal servant who waited on him, helpin ghim get dressed, taking care of his clothes etc, and his wife would have a lady's maid who did the same for her, helping gher dress, doing her hair, caring for her clothes etc. There would be a nanny to look after the children, and if it was a large family she would probably have a nursery maid to assist her. Older girls would have a governess to teach them, or possibly they might go away to school like their brothers would when they were old enough.
Outside there would be gardeners to take care of the gardens, and grooms to look after the horses in the stables. And there would be a coachman to drive the coach when the family went out. And there would be a gamekeeper, or perhaps more than one, who would look after the lands, keep an eye out for poachers, and take care of the game birds that the master and his friends would enjoy shooting in the winter.

Question answered by Jonas
I've never heard of "inviting" an employee to anything other than a social event.
If the event is for work, and it's part of this employee's job, then it's not an invitation. It's a meeting appointment. You should have a calendaring application at your place of work that would handle the essentials such as time, place, who should come, etc.
why do rich people not respect there domestic help ?
why do some people always treat there domestic staff without respect ? and talk to them like they think they are stupid ?
is it because they pay and feel they almost own them, or is it because they do some of the unpleasent jobs around the house ?
does the personality of a maid/housekeeper matter or should they just show respect and follow orders ?

I wondered that too.
Rich people think they're Gods just because they have lots of money. What they need to know is that we're all humans and that their house domestics are humans too. They can just up and leave, now who will they disrespect?
Where can a houseboy/maid couple find work?
My wife and I have considered working as domestic staff. We are considering our options to find employment situations in which I could work as a houseboy and my wife could work as a maid. I have heard of formal training schools for butlers, but I am not sure about couples, or where couples could both be employed together.

Are the terms "maid servant" and domestic servant" still used?
I recently saw an add for a "female servant maid", I think for India, and wondered if there are countries that still refer to female or male domestic staff as servants? Do they refer to them as servants so they work longer hours and have lower working conditions?
Kim
Question answered by Judge Julie
Kim - welcome to the real world. India has a caste system - please google "caste system" for enlightenment. Everybody in India is born to be something, from the lowest to the highest, there is no "lateral" movement. A young lad who's father is a farmer, must remain a farmer himself, and must marry a woman in his own caste. Servants are born into families of servants - has nothing to do with long hours, or "lower" working conditions, its a just given. Remember, this is a society that follows cows to grab the offal as they walk down the street. (only persons who's' family has done that since time immemorial are allowed to follow cows and sell the dung to the farmers)
Are United States Ambassadorial Residences usually luxury homes and mansions?
Many countries who have embassies in the United States also have Ambassadorial Residences which seem to be usually luxury homes or mansions.
Are most of the official residences of Ambassadors of the United States luxury homes and mansions? I know for a fact some of these are worth in the millions, some almost as large as the White House it seems like. The upkeep and domestic staff must be expensive.
It seems a very little studied and documented thing, perhaps the Government does not want the public to know how much is spent by the State Department overseas? Maintaining embassies, Ambassadorial Residences, local staff, and all is not cheap.

Question answered by dognhorsemom
You're completely wrong about Ambassadors' residences being "very little studied and documented." Great care is taken of all US-leased and -owned residences abroad, and the standards for size and cost are very strictly supervised and enforced by the Overseas Building Office and Congress.
There is some misunderstanding, however, especially about the apparently huge and elaborate places that ambassadors appear to occupy. What you need to understand is that these residences are primarily meant for - and are used constantly for - representational purposes: receptions, meetings, congresses, etc that engage and involve American political, social, cultural and business interests with local authorities, businesspeople, rulers, despots, charitable organizations, NGOs, artists, cultural icons, etc. It is not unusual for there to be two or three such events every single day. As you can imagine, it is considered very prestigious to have attended an event at the US Ambassador's house, and this prestige is used for good effect to support American interests.
For these purposes, a large part (usually the ground floor of the building) is large, open, and usually decorated with art produced (and often donated) by American or local artists. Many Ambassadors have also collected and then donated local arts and crafts to the residences they have occupied only temporarily.
Where the Ambassador lives is a different story. It is normally a medium-sized three-bedroom, two bath, pretty ordinary apartment on an upper floor. These apartments, because they're often located in older buildings, frequently suffer even more than the usual local problems with electricity, plumbing, termites, cockroaches, ets.
Is it safer to use an ordinary domestic can opener on catering size cans or is it safer ot use a special one?
I have just begun to run a small cafe in the uk which I have bought. One of my staff has cut herself using an ordinary small manual can opener on a large catering size of tuna. Should I invest in a special can opener for these catering size cans? I don't want to be sued.

Question answered by Mighty Mouse
Get yourself a commercial bench mount can opener, it will save you time and any other possible injuries at work. Last thing you want is your workers compensation insurance to go up for silly little things.
Plus it will last longer as you will need to keep replacing the domestic one as it is not designed for high volume and large tins
