How do you get away with diving in a basketball match?

Diving is used to draw extra plays for example. The floor is pretty hard and one can injure himself in a game when diving is done wrong. In most games, do refs buy it or they eject you from the game? Sorry I should have worded it better. I meant diving as in extreme flopping.

Question answered by Eddie H

there are no illegal moves about diving for a basketball. Ref can not do anything about it. unless you foul or step out before you dive for the ball.

How do you start or get involved in syncro diving?

I love platform diving. I am about to dive in college. How do i start syncro diving? and compete in it?

Catherine

Question answered by CS

http://www.usadiving.org/ Choose Find a Diving Club in the drop down menu from the top of the page. Whether you want to dive, want to compete, and/or want to do synchro diving, you have to start there.

What is the best place/ location to learn scuba diving in the Philippines?

I am planning to learn scuba diving in the Philippines but I like the place to be low-priced but has a lot to offer terms of the beauty of the dive sites. If you can give an estimate how much I would spend for a period of time for diving and accomodations, that will be very much appreciated. Thanks! OK I'm down to a few choices: Puerto Galera, Anilao, and Palawan. Which one is best? Let me know. And if you have other suggestions, that will be great. Thanks!

Question answered by Subic

If you like the idea of wreck diving rather than reef, i can recommend Subic bay. $40 a night at Boardwalk Hotel, and $360 for 4 dives, full 1:1 instruction, equipment hire etc with Butch at the Scuba Shack just opposite the hotel. If you go, tell him that Keith recommended him and Michelle sends her regards.

Commercial diving? How much diving experiance is needed and whats pay based on?

I have passed my basic diving and would consider making a career out of it if their were an opportunity to do so. Im also currently studying to pass my mechanical and electrical engineering NVQ lvl 2,3 and National; sub diploma.

Question answered by tjs282

You don't need to be a hugely experienced diver to enroll in comm.-dive training courses. The only reason that comm.-dive training facilities might want to see a sport-diving qual. is to demonstrate that the prospective student already knows at least the basic principles of scuba (e.g. depth/pressure relationships, equalisation, nitrogen considerations, etc.). Otherwise, recreational/sport diver training pretty much counts for nought as far as comm.-diving goes--the purposes are different, the rigs are (usually) different, and the procedures are different. Your NVQ is likely to be far more valuable in this context, especially if it involves practical skills such as design, construction, or welding. Comm.-dive training can teach you to apply these skills underwater. Regarding starting pay and general careers available, this site appears to have a lot of useful info (no, I don't work for them): http://www.theunderwatercentre.co.uk/

Whats the difference between diving with a wetsuit or a drysuit?

I am doing my PADI Open Water Dive Course next week and the week after in Gildenburgh Water lake in the UK. I will be diving with a drysuit as the water temparature is around 4oC! I did my Discover Scuba in Thailand in a wetsuit. I would like to know if it is more difficult diving in a drysuit and what differences are there?????

Eoin

Question answered by Nick T

To expand on the previous posters. A wetsuit works by trapping a thin layer of water between you and the suit which heats up relatively quickly. Decent seals ensure that the water doesn't flush through and thus keeps you warm. A dry suit works by keeping a layer of air between you and the suit. Depending upon what materials are used the suit itself can offer little or no thermal protection (i.e. Trilaminate suits) which is why you usually wear an undersuit. Because a dry suit contains air it acts as another airspace and must be regulated. To allow this it has an inlet valve and a dump valve. This adds to the complexity of your setup, an extra inflator hose for one; and because of it you will need training on how to use the suit. Generally you use the suit as well as your BCD, keep enough air in the suit to be warm and comfortable, as you descend you will need to add a little air to the suit to prevent a suit squeeze, they can really hurt if your 'bits' are not tucked out of the way properly!. Dry suit also have 1 or 2 other potential problems, such as air in the feet which can cause a feet first runaway ascent if not handled correctly and quickly. In general a drysuit is almost as easy to dive in as a wetsuit but far bulkier, and requires more lead to get neutral buoyancy because of it. The advantage is that in theory at least you are completely dry and you wont suffer from the wind chill effect that you get from a wet wetsuit.

How good is the diving on Palancar reef?

I am going on a cruise in a few weeks and will be stopping in Cozumel. I would like to dive there. I saw on some sites that the Palancar Reef sustained some damage during some bad storms/hurricanes. Can anyone give me a more up-to-date idea of how good the diving is at Palancar Reef? I'll also be stopping in Grand Caymen so feel free to throw in any info about diving there as well. Thanks!

Question answered by moviebuff

I make at least 2 dive trips to Cozumel a year (and have since year 2000), so I'm fairly familiar with the reefs there. My observation is that the Cozumel reefs have indeed deteriorated in the 10+ years that I've been diving there, but there is still plenty of healthy coral. As far as storms go, the double-whammy of hurricanes Emily and Wilma in 2005 definitely took a toll on the Cozumel reefs, but my perception is that most of the recent deterioration is due to bleaching (possibly from warmer water temps, diver stress, or ??). There aren't any real large dead areas on the Palancar reefs, but some spots just look a little "rough" to me. However, since this is your first time diving in Cozumel you may not notice it as much as others who have been diving there regularly. FYI, the Palancar reef system is essentially one long reef on the southern part of the island, with several different dive sites along it - Colombia, Palancar Bricks, Palancar Gardens, Palancar Caves, and Palancar Horseshoe are the main ones. The signature of the Palancar system is huge coral pillars that rise from the sand at 80-100 feet until they are 25-30 feet from the surface. Dives on Palancar are typically multi-level which start at the sand and then wind in around the coral pillars as you gradually ascend to safety stop depth. It really is a magnificent place to dive, sort of like swimming through a mountain range - I don't think you will be disappointed. Your second dive will be on one of the shallower garden reefs to the north of Palancar. Some of the shallower reefs did take a bit of storm damage that the deeper reefs escaped, so you may notice dead areas where coral was killed or shifting sand uncovered older, dead coral limestone. You should still see plenty of healthy coral and possibly more interesting aquatic life than on Palancar, but the reef itself won't be as impressive. Enjoy your time in Cozumel!

How is being a diving instructor related to science?

I'm doing a science career project and I got the job, Diving Instructor. They're basically people teaching others how to scuba dive. But how is that related to science?

Miguel

Question answered by L. E. Gant

One of the things about scuba diving is that you need to know the effects of pressure as it varies with depth. You finish up with formulas that tell you how long you can stay down, and how long you need to spend coming up, based n the depth you were at for most of the time. That's what makes diving dangerous (among the more obvious dangers), and one that many people just don't realise until they get into trouble. It's an application of science to a real situation.

Question answered by tjs282

To expand Goober's answer (and your question) to SCUBA diving in general (diving is generally a means to an end, not just an end in itself), I would also add the sciences (marine) biology/ecology (if you want to study marine life), archaeology (if you want to study wrecks and other submerged human artefacts), and chemistry/materials science and mechanical engineering (if you want to design/develop SCUBA technology which will work reliably in salt water under high pressures). An instructor should certainly know at least a little about the natural environment, because one of the questions s/he will most often be asked by his/her students after a dive is 'What was that strange fish/thing I saw?' Scuba instructors are also quite often employed by e.g. conservation project foundations, to train their volunteers to dive and carry out marine-life surveys.

What year did diving come into the premier league?

What player contributed the most to diving to make it acceptable now. I see well there is a suprise a German ruining the english game what an idiot i remember him now.
