What is the best way to install composite decking?
I am installing VERANDA composite decking and bought the recommended composite screws. I am finding it extremely difficult to install these screws, even when drilling pilot holes (which I really don't want to do for every hole - this is a large deck). The product info says there is no pre-drilling required, but I'm not finding that to be true. Does anyone have any tips for me to make this a little easier and less time consuming? I'm using a Black and Decker drill/screwdriver.

There are many ways to install this type of decking today. But rather than pre-drilling I am going to list several ways that are gaining popularity. But you need to check with your building inspector as just because these ways have been proven to be a success, they must still be written into local building code and passed into law. That is something done about every 5 years.
First buy a good Screw/Decking gun if your deck it that big. It will be worth the money. Even for the home novice I use this one myself
DeWalt Heavy-Duty 18V Cordless Drywall/Deck Screwdriver Kit

You can even rent one.
#1
Buy self drilling stainless steel screws. These have a drill bit forged on the tip of every screw. You will need to go to a real lumber yard for these as home centers (Home Depot, Lowes) are behind in technology.
The next 2 ways are gaining popularity because there are no screw holes on the top of the boards
#2
Buy or rent a a slot cutter and cut a slot in the side of the deck board. Now use a plastic wafer to push into the slot s of 2 adjacent boards and a special screw goes through a hole in the wafer.
#3
Rent a pneumatic finished nail gun. Buy some stailless steel finishing nails for this gun. And buy caulking tubes of 3M Marine 5200 Sealant. (No other sealant is approved for this usage)
Put a bead of sealant down, put the deck board in place and shoot 2 finish nails into it to hold it in place until the sealant completly cures. (2 to 3 weeks)
What you get will be no screws on the top of your deck showing and a deck that of the all the methods is the strongest. The only down side is that once the sealant cured this deck can not be taken apart with out destroying it.

How much would Trex composite decking cost per square foot?
My husband is a DIY'er and wants to replace our deck with this. I never get to see the Home Depot bill. I might faint if I did considering the time he spends in there...
How much would it cost for composite decking in materials? Thanks.

Question answered by GuitarGeorge
Different prices in different areas, but you can figure roughly 3 times the price of pressure treated decking.
What is the best way to fasten composite decking?
I am replacing my deck board with Ultradeck Comqosite decking. What is the best way to fasten it?

Question answered by rmbrruffian
There are special screws that don't cause the composite to build up around the heads with the waste. They go in flush and there are no 'burrs' to contend with. With regular screws, there is the material that gets pushed out and up around the heads to deal with, making the deck unsightly and uncomfortable to walk on with bare feet. I'm sure the screws cost more, but they are probably worth it.
Which composite decking is best to use?
I am rebuilding front steps on my porch and am leaning toward composite decking. the builder wants to use Weatherbest. Does anyone have pos/neg things to say about this brand versus Trex or are they all essentially the same?

What is the formula to figure out what linear footage is needed for decking coverage being installed diagonal?
this is an outdoor deck the material being used to cover the deck is 5 1/2" wide, the deck is 34' x 12'. i am installing the decking on a 45 degree diagonal. i need to know how many linear feet i need of the 5 1/2" decking boards.

Question answered by BearDown
The linear footage remains the same whether run straight or diagonally. In this case a 12'x34' deck is 816 linear feet, you figure in for waste (cut-offs) and it comes to about 1000 linear feet. The way I figure it, you should be safe ordering about 35 20'ers and about 20 16'ers. Use the longer lengths in the middle for no seams. Run the 16'ers long on the ends, cut off, and re-use the remainder. This is just an estimate, if you have a few pieces left over, you can save them or return them. If you are a few pieces short, you'll have to go buy the extras.

What type of deck material and what kind of trees? I have a large wooden deck with a red oak tree growing up through a hole. The tree was planted by my father so I didn't want to cut it down. However, it is very messy with leaves, twigs and birds, but not so much sap. You can try mopping with kerosene or paint thinner and washing with soap and water. Of course, you will get some odor at first from the kerosene but it will wash away. Use a scented laundry detergent to help the smell. Also, be careful of fire until you wash the kerosene away.
If your deck is made of wood you can prevent it from being slick by painting. While the paint is still wet, sprinkle sand over it and add a second coat of paint after the first dries.
Good luck.

I don't know what type of pressure washer you were using, but even the small electric ones have enough pressure to cut grooves in decking & with the right tip, will clean anything from the wood.
Plain water in the pressure washer is really all you need
Once it has been cleaned & allowed to thoroughly dry it should be treated with a penetrating sealer like CWF.
Mold & mildew will grow on surfaces that are shaded & don't get any sun. Oil type treatments, like CWF, are usually good for 1-2 years, then pressure washing & re-treatment will again be necessary.
For occasional spot growth of mold, a Borax & water solution is better at killing surface mold & it does not discolor or damage like bleach does.
Good luck...
Garden decking : when wet or damp, our decking is as slippery as an ice rink ! Is there a treatment ?
A treatment that can be made at home - or suggested from a Garden Centre / DIY centre - that will make the decking safe to walk on ?

Fraz is right. Wood decking is naturally porous enough that it doesn't get slick when it's wet. However, a gray or black fungus can grow on it that is barely noticeable when it's dry, but is like grease when it's wet. You can pressure wash the deck or scrub it with a chlorine bleach/ water mix to remove that fungus. You can buy commercial preparations at the building supply for the purpose but chlorox works just as well and is much cheaper. Once you have the wood cleaned up and dry you can treat it with a penetrating oil preservative that has will keep the fungus at bay and will not be slick. A heavy coat of paint can be just as slick as the fungus when it's wet.
