Depending on your age. If you are in high school take drafting/blueprint reading courses. If you are college age take some hours in construction technology. Business management courses would be a big plus also.
The best place is on the job training as a carpenter. Carpenters always seem to need to know a little about all different trades on a job.
My carpenters are always the ones the other trades come to and ask questions about the job. That does not mean carpenters are the most important - it just means they have the best knowledge of basic provisions of the overall job.
Electricians and plumbers are probably performing more specialized areas of work, but the entire construction team is needed.
A good Union carpenters apprentice program will teach you a lot and get you some on the job training also.
I started out as a union carpenter then started by own General Contracting Company 31 years ago.
It's a good job.
What is the difference between a Construction Manager and a General Contractor?
Just wondering the differences between the occupations of a construction manager and a general contractor, if there are any.

Question answered by breasia
I believe that a construction manager often is a general contractor but not vice versa.
A construction manager simply oversees the construction going on.
A general contractor contracts with sub-contractors.
There also may be some legal difference in liability: A general contractor is governed by his Licensing Board and therefore has or should have Workmen's Compensation and a Fidelity Bond which covers liability. A construction manager probably does not have this requirement.
Would this job be good experience if I wanted to get into journalism?
The company is called Construction Journal. They "provide comprehensive, accurate and timely Information on Construction Projects from the early planning stages through the bidding process to the project award. Real-Time updates provide our subscribers with the most timely information available. Developers, Construction Managers, General Contractors, Sub-Contractors, Suppliers, Architects, Engineers and many other industry professionals use Construction Journal every day to identify projects to offer their goods or services. "
I would have the position of Construction Reporter, contacting construction projects and getting the latest updates and information and posting it to our website.

This sounds like a great experience and you would give you the chance to learn how to do research, acquire information, and I'm guessing, do research through the Internet and through phone calls.
I'd stick with the smaller guys if you want to do unfettered work.
Just graduated, What should I do with my Bachelors degree in Construction Management?
Hi I just graduated with a degree in construction management. I am 22 yrs old and now deciding exactly what I want to do for a living. I have had four internships with general contractors and construction management firms and I did not enjoy working with them. I want a job that I enjoy and that I am excited to go to everyday. Please help guide me with some suggestions of jobs/fields I should look into.
Thanks!
Aaron
Question answered by Neil James
You have a degree + 4 internships and did not like any of those internships??
Well you must sit down and analyze those internships carefully. You must figure out what it was about those jobs that you disliked....make a list based on each job to see if there is a common thread.
What about the degree itself....was there nothing in those courses that appealed to you? There must be or you've wasted a lot of time and money.
You need a good long think....perhaps if you had a favourite prof in your studies you could visit him/her and they may have a suggestion.
You have not given us much to go on and I know nothing about the construction trade myself....but I do know that you must plot your course in life....don't take a job for a job sake....think long and hard and talk to people in the trade that know you and may help.
Is the general contractor of a construction site responsible for injuries sustained by the subcontractor?
Is the general contractor of a construction site responsible for injuries sustained by the subcontractor in the state of Kentucky? My dad, a subcontractor, was electrocuted while on a job site, and I wanted to know if the general contractor is responsible for his incident?
Thanks! (10 points to first correct answer)
EDIT:
He was a contractor owner/operator, if that makes a difference. If not, who would be responsible for the job site(s)?

Question answered by going_for_baroque
As always, you have to define your terms. If your dad was a contractor, subcontracting to another contractor, he had his own insurance, right? Any injuries would have been covered by his own insurance. If you're thinking of a lawsuit, you *really* need legal help, not just Y!A sympathy. If you have any contracts between the general contractor and your dad (to perform specific tasks, etc.), take them to an attorney and be factual. Don't say what a terrific guy, what a decent husband he is, yadda yadda. Limit your discussion to the facts surrounding the accident and the documents you have regarding the contractual agreements. An initial consultation should be modest, maybe even free. At this time, you'll know more about local practices and what a lawsuit could cost you and gain you. A better answer really isn't possible. ... Take documents, talk facts. Best of luck!!!
What is the best place online to find construction jobs?
My husband is a construction manager with a commercial general contractor and seeks employment in the USA. This is his first time seeking online for construction management jobs or executive construction jobs. There are many job boards but which offer the best for construction employment opportunities?
ruthbercy hornberger
Question answered by
Construction management jobs or constructon executive jobs are unique given the high level income required. You could consider the large generic boards like monster.com, www.buildfind.com or www.tradejobsonline.com, but the specialty boards like 6figurejobs.com or www.constructionexecutive.com are more focused and only list senior and high-end construction management jobs.
Many large employers in construction have their own career websites such as turnerconstruction.com and clarkconstruction.com, but there are some construction employer directories such as www.contractorlocate.com or www.servicemagic.com
Good luck.
How does the pay schedule work for commercial construction?
Building my first commercial construction project. I am wondering what the typical (if there is one) pay schedule is like for say a retail shopping center. I assume it is pay by progress, that is as a stage is completed the sub contractor bills the general who bills who ever is financing. Would this be correct? Or is a 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 type of situation? Or does it depend? Any feedback would be great.
Right Vs Wrong
Question answered by Andrew O
It depends. Usually targeted deliverables generate a payment to the contractor. It depends on what type of contract you are under. Deliverable to payment or payment for actual materials and labor plus overhead?

Question answered by joejack
You will need insurance to even be considered. 2 million will cover just about everything and is not hard to aquire. If you plan to use workers you will need workman's comp insurance also to put yourself in the running even if you only plan to use one or two.
Commercial jobs boil down to liability.
