What do household chemicals do that affects sewage treatment?

How do these chemicals affect the effectiveness of sewage treatment? Which products or chemicals are most likely to affect the process of sewage treatment? What would it not only do to the sewage treatment, but also the habitats that these chemicals are exposed to and the animals/humans that live there?

Hey Lauren,(its Elana) these sites really helped me http://allinclusiveinc.net/documents/Residual-Substances-in-Wastewater.pdf http://www.co.suffolk.ny.us/stormwater/Household_Chemicals.html http://www.waterencyclopedia.com/Ce-Cr/Chemicals-from-Consumers.html oh and Mrs. Horwitz said you can talk about where the treated sewage water goes because since not all the chemicals are removed it effects these enviroments

What's the difference between industrial chemicals and chemicals found directly in nature?

Some of these industrial chemicals can be found in shampoos, soaps, pharmaceuticals, detergents, preservatives, etc are harmful, poisonous, or corrosive to the human body. Lye for example is so corrosive, it can permanently destroy living tissue and cause scaring. What makes these substances caustic or poisonous, compared to substances found directly in nature? How are these substances derived? Natural chemicals are found in water, rocks and stones, plants, and animals. As far as I am concerned, nothing in nature is caustic, as I have never had water or a certain stone corrode my skin if it came in direct contact with my skin.

Question answered by Iggy

Technically nothing. Naturally occurring chemicals are typically indistinguishable from artificially produced ones in a laboratory. The difference in nature is typically a matter of concentration, however this doesn't mean natural substances aren't harmful. Certain minerals [1], [2] and [3] would be harmful if ingested. If you ate cane toads or particular sorts of mushrooms these could kill you. Pyrethrum is produced by plants and effectively a type of nerve toxin to insects. Curare is a type of plant which was used to dip poison darts. No industrial processing necessary. All completely a natural part of life in South America. Radioactive minerals are bad for anyone. If you threw yourself into a volcano you would burn and if you breathed certain volcanic gasses you would hallucinate, damage your lungs or asphyxiate. In the Northern Territory of Australia acid rain falls which is naturally generated by the plant life of that region. All this without taking you outside of the envelope of the earth's atmosphere. Don't assume nature is not harmful, just because you haven't experienced it directly that way.

What kinds of pesticides or chemicals are used and/or put into red meat?

I am wondering what kinds of chemicals and pesticides are used in the production of red meat. I am researching, for schoo, how vegetarianism/veganism effects the environment. I already red meat know is fairly unhealthy, but how much more unhealthy is it with the chemicals used during/after the production of the meat, and how much/many of the chemicals make it to the finished product on my dinner table?

carbon monoxide, for one.... carbon monoxide is a poison that restricts the body's ability to absorb oxygen into the bloodstream. carbon monoxide can even kill someone if they get too much of it at once. it is used to keep meat from looking spoiled. if you take a piece of meat that has been treated with carbon monoxide and one that hasn't, the one that has been treated with the chemical will look fresh long after the other has turned green. gross to think that people eat meat that would be spoiled and green without chemicals injected into it, isn't it??

How is an industrial chemical produced? Why are some industrial chemicals harmful or caustic, while things found in nature are not usually caustic? . .

Question answered by John

Why are some industrial chemicals harmful or caustic, while things found in nature are not usually caustic? Things are caustic because they are reactive. In nature anything that is reactive will have already reacted, so caustic compounds are rare. Look at lime Ca(OH)2 Start with limestone CaCO3 and kiln it to make CaO quicklime (caustic) leave it outside. CaO+ H2O -> Ca(OH )2 Calcium Hydroxide, "slaked lime" - not caustic but still quite alkaline then over time it absorbs CO2 Ca(OH )2 + CO2 -> CaCO3 + H2O now much less alkaline.

Question answered by billrussell42

no difference if you consider the chemical alone. Salt, Sodium Chloride, is Sodium Chloride no matter the source. In combination, they will have different levels of impurities. How is it made? depends on the chemical. It could come from plants or rocks, for example. There are millions of industrial chemicals, and a good percentage are harmful. Be more specific. And chemicals from "nature" are the same. Sulfuric acid (made from sulfur, a natural material) is pretty caustic.

When chemicals are used to control unwanted organisms, then the wisest application strategy, in light of natur?

When chemicals are used to control unwanted organisms, then the wisest application strategy, in light of natural selection and assuming that chemicals generally have negative effects on the environment, is to apply A)a large dose of a single chemical. B)a small dose of a single chemical. C)a moderate dose of a single chemical. D)large doses of several different chemicals. E)moderate doses of several different chemicals.

darknight

Question answered by BioLiz

I would say E) moderate doses of several chemicals. Natural selection will allow for mutants to emerge, especially if you give just one dose of a single chemical. If you apply multiple chemicals at the same time, the chance that a mutant arises that is resistant to all these chemicals is very small. In light of the negative effect of the chemicals on the environment, you would choose moderate doses instead of large. Hope that was helpful.

How can the chemicals added to foods effect the human body?

There are added chemicals in basically everything we eat. Even the produce we buy from the store, pesticides have been added to them. How can the chemicals added effect the human body?

Question answered by Laura N

Pesticides is toxic. Most household products contain pesticides .It can lead to cancer. I would recommend switching to a non-chemical based products. As far as produce, you can buy organic and avoid canned food as well.

What are different kinds of liquid chemicals that are on the periodic table?

I just need a list of liquid chemicals to test for my science fair project. I know some of you might say it is unsafe to add some solvents to different liquid chemicals, but for now, I just need a good list of liquid chemicals to add it. I'll do my research on these chemicals and see if it will be safe or not.

Question answered by istefifay^_^x

if your talking about the ones in the periodic table, the only liquid elements at normal temperature ar mercury and bromine. it actually depends on the reactants if it's safe or not to add liquid solvents. so u should know what type of reaction will take place and what are the products form. but i'll give some liquid chemicals/compunds Ferric Chloride solution Bromine Water Ethanol potassium permanganate sodium bicarbonate solution sodium hydroxide solution orcinol resorcinol iodine solution ammonium chloride that's all i can remember. hope this helps.

Question answered by Generalist

G With the simpler compounds like ammonia, mercury, hydrochloric acid, etc., it is mostly a matter of concentration. They all exist in nature, but are diluted, or tied up in inert compounds. Humans, though have created thousands of chemicals that on't exist in nature, and aginst which we, and our life-support system don't have effective defenses.

What factors determine the order chemicals are written in a chemical equation?

I know that chemicals are listed in order of phase, s, l, g, aq, but what order? Are there any other factors in determining the order? For example, if there are two solids, are they listed in alphabetical order?

Brendt B

Question answered by DPG

In a chemical equation the general practice is to to right reactants on the left and products on the right. Generaly sequance is solids liquids gases. the substance whose properties are being studied is written first and then the substance whose effect on it is being studied is written there after.for example if we want to study what will happen if a metaal is treated with acid or alakli than the metal will be written first and than the acid or alkali.
