How does a single lever faucet work?

I need a simple answer for my 6 year old. I've looked on-line & in books and can only find how to fix one. Answers or sources would be appreciated. Thanks!

Natalie

Question answered by Gary H

There are different designs so yours might be different but typically, the handle is connected to a metal ball the size of a big marble with a hole thru it. The socket the ball sits in has two holes: one hole open to the cold water supply, one open to the hot water supply. The socket on top of the ball has a hole (more like a slot) that is connected to the tap where water comes out into the sink. When you lift the handle, the ball rotates in the socket. When you move the lever up in one direction (to one side), the hole in the ball moves over the hole with the cold water, move the handle the other way and it moves over the hole with hot water, move it up "in between" and it uncovers some of both holes so you get a mix of hot and cold water. When you shut it off, the hole moves over solid socket surface so no water flows. If you use the sink alot (and with a 6 year old, that is easy to do), the socket will wear out enough that the faucet will drip unless you shut it off "just right". If you can fix this by simply tightening the threaded piece the holds the ball (and handle) in place, you can try to tackle this yourself. This is relatively easy to fix (and a lot cheaper than buying a completely new faucet) and it is also lets you see exactly how it works. If you want to do this yourself, you will need a few tools. Remember to shut off both hot and cold water supply lines under the sink (this way you do not have to turn the water off to the whole house). Then, try turning on the water at the sink, both hot and cold. You will get a little water out when you first turn in on but the water should stop flowing completely, not even dripping. If it doesn't, then the shut off valves are leaking (even though they are hardly ever used) and that means your faucet will be leaking the entire time you have it apart so, if it take an hour to get the right replacement part at the hardware store, you can leak a lot of water onto the floor in an hour. There are so many designs even within a particular faucet manufacturer that it is best to disassemble your faucet, take the parts to the hardware store and find the exact replacement parts. If you just want to see exactly how these work, google the big faucet mnfrs, go to their websites (Price Phister, Moene, Delta, etc) and you may find diagrams. Hope this helps.

How to remove scratches off a windshield?

Would Quixx Acrylic Scratch Remover work? My windshield is not cracked but my friend was trying to help me clean off my windshield and he accidently scratched it. Now my windshield has more than one scratch. What product should i use to get rid of the scratches??? Please help!

Chris E

Question answered by apoorapothecary

If the scratch is deep enough to catch your fingernail, its too deep to fix. However, if its a light scratch, you can use a glass polish to get the scratches out. When you use it, however, do not press hard into the glass or you'll otherwise scratch it further - you need to use a lot of time, and very little pressure. The best thing to use is a polisher buff for a drill, or a small buffer with a cover suitable for the polish (refer to the polish mnfr. for the correct buff pad). Griot's and Clear View both make windshield glass polish, and both are fairly good. Another polish is "AutoGlym". Good luck!

How to measure resistance of the industry?

I want to know what resistance the industry application has in order to determine the power required to drive it..is there any method by which i can find it.Most of the supplies in the industry will be 3 phase.

Question answered by Gary H

Depending on what you workgin on, this type of analysis requires are fairly sophisticated understanding of all the factors involved. I recommend you consult with an electrical power engineer or an electrical engineer. You might be able to find some technical assistance from the electric power utility. If a company/mnfg operation (such as yours) has significant electrical usage, the utility company will want to be sure that this usage can be handled properly to avoid problems with their network. There can be problems for the network when you first turn on your equipment, what time of day you turn it on, when you turn it off, and when there might be certain types of interruptions. You could also ask for technical assistance from the manufacturer of the equipment which will be drawing the electrical load. The equipment mnfr will, presumably, have done an electrical design analysis so they can provide the specifications and tolerances.

What is the ideal temp and humidity for a controlled Quality lab?

I believe 68 +/- 2 deg is ideal with humidity never to excede 50%.

Craig

Question answered by Gary H

It depends on what kind of quality testing is being done. Requirements may be different for a chemistry lab vs dimension measurement lab vs particulate analysis lab vs etc. Most equipment mnfrs will only guarantee the performance of their inspection equipment if the environment is controlled within certain limits. Check with CMM and OGP equipment suppliers. Also check with the Calibration Services providers.

How would I test plastics to figure out what "number" they art?

So I want to be able to take plastics, like from some bags, some old electronics, old toys, and other random plastics, and recycle them. But I don't want ANY to be placed into the wrong section, can anyone tell me how to test them?

EPhantom

Question answered by Gary H

check out websites for plastic recycling. Other than chemical analysis, I don't think there is any way to tell unless you know from the mnfr.

Garbage disposal is clogged and slow draining?

A binder clip accidentally dropped inside the garbage disposal. I removed the body but the metal wire wings went inside those round holes. I am not really sure where those wires went and I am just thinking it is still inside the garbage disposal unit as now the garbage disposal is slow draining. Can the garbage disposal be opened and how?

totole

Question answered by Cpt1nsano

It can be opened but if you have to ask, I don't recommend doing it. But if you insist, get the install manual from the Mnfr. website and do a reverse install. Then if you're lucky, the Mnfr. will also have an exploded parts diagram that you can follow and deduce the method of disassembly. Good luck

Are all infrared heat products the same or different?

Are all infrared heat products the same or different? What would be the difference please?Im wanting an infrared heat product that penetrates the deepest into the tissues Are there different types of infrared heat?If there are can you please tell me the diffrence eg"longwave etc Thankyou

kay k ♥

Question answered by Gary H

The term IR (infrared) actually refers to a range of electromagnetic radiation, a range of different wave lengths, all of them longer than the visible red the human eye can see. I am not familiar with the specific instruments designed for heating human tissue but I would guess that there are differences. Certainly in industrial applications of IR technology, there are different types, different wavelengths used to measure temperature and different means of generating IR radiation. Call the mnfr, ask for technical support, and see if they can answer your specific questions. Their websites may have some info. Hope this helps

Can I sue a cell phone manufacturer for breaching consumer's warranty agreement. Here's my story.?

My cell phone went bad within the 1-year warranty. I sent it back to the manufacturer (MNFR), and they sent me a phone under their warranty replacement program. Called sprint, my service provider, to get the phone programmed. Sprint told me that the manufacturer has locked this phone, and they're unable to program it. I called MNFR and they said they'd call sprint to release the phone. After a few weeks MNFR determined they could not unlock the phone, and that they need to send me another one. The condition was that once they recieve the phone, they'll send me another one, but somehow it got lost in their tracking system, which meant I ended up waiting 60+ days for another phone instead of the usual 7-21 days. Sprint couldn't program 2nd phone either because it is programmed as a pre-paid phone only. I 've been trying to get a phone to work for 4 months now, and I refuse to send them this phone until they send me a new one! If they refuse, and I sue, can i win the lawsuit? Thnx! Problem with this manufacturer, is that for me to reach a supervisor, I need to wait for a supervisor to call me. I"m supposed to get a call from him/her in the next few days (argggh!!!). Based on how well that conversation agrees, I'll decide whether I'll go with it. Is this doable in a small claims court?

Question answered by johngalt4273

If you are in America, you can sue anybody for anything. We are a nation of laws... and lawyers. However, you have to ask yourself, do you want a phone or a lawsuit? Go up the chain of command with customer service and get someone who can actually make things right, instead of making excuses. That's what I would do.
