What can i do with my Architectural Technology Degree?

Studying BSc (Hons) Architectural Technology and Design. Looking for a placement for Sept2013 and just wondering if i'm structly narrowed down to finding an 'Architectural Technologist' Role. I get on far better with the software side of it and drawing on AutoCAD (and various other softwares). Any advice?

Information is below.

How can I practice and improve my drawing abilities?

I am in my second year of 6th form (year 13), and I want to become an Architectural Technologist. This requires pretty accurate drawing ability. Basically, I was just wondering if there are any exercises, or particular subjects that I can draw to help me improve my drawing ability. Or perhaps any helpful tips, such as dos and don'ts of architectural drawing. Thanks for any help.

Well you probably just want to practice practice practice. Get pictures of buildings and sketch them out, start with easier and simple buildings then work up to buildings with more details and technicalities. Sometimes people just aren't that great at drawing by nature, but for what you want to do you don't need to be an artist just have to get all the basics down :)

Don't listen to that guy. Architects sketch by hand all the time. Get some set squares and some onion paper and start sketching over existing designs. Learn to hand sketch and get a drafting manual on standard practice. Many new drafters require atleast 4 months of training just to learn the symbols. The ones who come in and can hit the ground running are hard to find.

Can you get a job in Jeddah if you are Graduate with 1 year experience?

I am due to finish my Architectural Technology Bsc degree in three years with one year sandwich. When I Iooked up through the Check4Jobs UK - Jobs in Jeddah sites I have read that they mostly ask for 5 or 10 years experience. 5 years experience seems quite long time to me and I am just wondering if it is possible for Architectural Technologist graduate to land a job abroad like in Jeddah SA. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No sorry you're going to need to have 5 or 10 years experience because that is one of the criteria requirements.

what does an architectural technologist do exactly?

I am looking for career now since im graduating but still struggle to find one. I like to design things such as homes and like to spend time on the computer doing it but also love to be outdoors. I'm Farley good at math, science and English and iv been looking into Architectural Technology as a potential career but I don't know if it suits me. What do they do for a majority of the time? is the job active or boring? is it good pay? is it hard ? and is there any other careers that mainly focuses on designing homes(or anything similar) that would be a better career choice?

Mike

Question answered by Terry

This would be a guy who specializes in unique construction methods, materials, and techniques. Don't go there if you want to build houses. I've built house for 20 years and nothing has changed. This job would entail going to work to find a way to construct a building or details of a building that cannot be accomplished using conventional methods or materials. This would be a high specialized job in which one would coordinate with engineers, architects, construction managers, and construction material vendors to design some way to construct some weird detail the architect is trying to incorporate into his design. Examples would include landmark type buildings that make up major city skylines. An extensive knowledge of metals, plastics, glass, concrete, and other building materials would be required to design these details and techniques. You would probably also want to have an aptitude for selling.

Do you need to be a good drawer to be an architectural technologist?

I'm thinking about studying architectural technology at university but I'm not a very good drawer. Is this an issue?

You need to be able to draw readable drawings, but when you become an architect client will probably prefer someone who can draw up well

Where is the best place to find a job in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

My family and I are looking to relocate to the UAE, either Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Although we would consider other up and coming areas. I am an Architectural Technologist with experience in Project Management within the accommodation side of the Oil and Gas Industry. 1) What is the best way to find employment within Dubai or Abu Dhabi? (suitable employer/agencies) 2) Where is the best locations within each area to live 3) What is the best property websites to find suitable accommodation. Many thanks

Mike

Question answered by H

Working in the oil/gas field, you should consider to relocate in Abu Dhabi where the oil is. Abu Dhabi holds around 90% of the Emirates oil. The best way to find employment in a higher position is to contact an oil recruiter directly. Example: http://www.oilrecruiter.net/index.php?page=m_uae You also can contact Abu Dhabi National Company (ADNOC). The link giving below provides you with contacts, job openings and leads to other institues belonging to ADNOC also. http://www.adnoc.ae/ Last opportunity are regular recruiters in the UAE. http://www.startpagedubai.com/jobs.htm Please be aware that all visa and work related costs have to be paid by the employer and aren't deductable of the salary. Best locations to live are plenty. I don't know what you consider being best. Will your wife have a car? Do you have school kids? Don't be bothered by the accommodation question before you have a job. It's necessary to negotiate a salary "package" including basic salary + housing + transportation. Some companies offer a lump sum as housing allowance whereas others provide accommodation. Cross that bridge when you get there. Depending where you may find a job, you may be located in Ruwais, around 240 km west of Abu Dhabi close to your work. About Ruwais: http://www.dubaifaqs.com/ruwais.php Another site to find accommodation: http://www.gnads4u.com/search.html?t=properties&cou=UAE If lucky and get hired, place another question regarding accommodation giving details about what you are looking for and I'll be able to recommend certain areas. Good luck!
