What's the difference between agricultural engineering and agronomist degree?

I'm from Italy and I like engeneering and agriculture, so I've heard about agricultural engineering but we don't have that in Italy, we just have colleges of agriculture wich has lot of science but less physics construction and math than engeneering. What are the subjects and in wich countries is there agricultural engeneering? And what are good colleges for that in Europe?

Pietro

Question answered by ERIC

From your description it sounds like you have a good grasp of what agricultural engineering is. Agronomy is basically crop and soil sciences dealing in food production. You will cover plant growth, soil fertility, weed control, soil types, etc. I'm not familiar at all with European colleges, but I would think that most of the main agricultural universities would also offer agricultural engineering as a degree. Also be aware that different colleges do sometimes have slightly different names for the same programs. I would check out the websites of some of the more well known agricultural colleges, and maybe make a few phone calls if still unclear as to which ones offer this. Since you're asking about college, I'll assume you're likely still in school, maybe the counselor there will have a good idea which colleges to check out. I remember when I was in that situation, my school had a big book that listed all of the colleges in the US and Canada with basic info on each and what programs were offered. Perhaps they may have something similar over there.

What is Environmental and Agricultural Engineering about?

I've had a tough time trying to figure out my major. Nothing really stood out at me. I recently got information on Environmental and Agricultural engineering. I would like info on these subjects. For example, are the classes for this major difficult? What degree would I need? How much annual salary can I expect? Also, are these careers considered a desk job? If there is one thing I hate is a desk job. Any additional information is welcome :) any schools in California for these majors? Thank you!

Agricultural engineers apply knowledge of engineering technology and science to agriculture and the efficient use of biological resources. They design agricultural machinery and equipment and agricultural structures. Some specialize in areas such as power systems and machinery design; structures and environment engineering; and food and bioprocess engineering. They develop ways to conserve soil and water and to improve the processing of agricultural products. Agricultural engineers often work in research and development, production, sales, or management. Agricultural engineers are expected to have employment growth about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014. The growing interest in worldwide standardization of agricultural equipment should result in increased employment of agricultural engineers. Job opportunities also should result from the need to feed a growing population, develop more efficient agricultural production, and conserve resources.

Where would I go to email an Agricultural Engineer?

I am doing this biology project and I just need a small interview (question and answers) by email. But I can't find a place to email an Agricultural Engineer or any other profession that is very similar. Can anyone suggest a site or know someone who has this profession?

Try a nearby university. I'm sure there will be one nearby that has Ag. Eng. somewhere as a department. You could browse the university's website and see if they have agricultural engineering and if they do contact one of the professors there.

Question answered by david c,

"How to Become an Agricultural Engineer Agricultural engineers must have a bachelor’s degree, preferably in agricultural engineering or biological engineering. Employers also value practical experience, so cooperative-education engineering programs at universities are valuable as well."

Can anyone recomend a school for agricultural engineering?

I am at the University of Texas right now but I would like to focus more of my studies on agroecology. UT really does not have a program so I want to transfer. I've seen some schools with BioAgricultural Science degrees and U of Illinois has an Agricultural Engineering progam but I have no idea if the school is good. I would like to stay in engineering since it is a more applied field than science. I'm really interested in sustainable agricultural and would like to put it into practice more than research. Any ideas? Thanks, Jim

The school is "good". University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is considered by many to be the top school of agriculture-related sciences in the world. The undergraduate Agricultural Engineering program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is ranked 1st and the undergraduate engineering program is ranked 5th in the 2008 America's Best Colleges edition of U.S. News and World Report (published in August 2007). The graduate engineering program at Illinois is ranked 5th in the Best Graduate Schools issue of U.S. News and World Report (published in March 2007). (College of Engineering) (ACES News) So. with that said I think that's good enough and it rest my case.

Is becoming an Agricultural Engineer a good choice?

I am currently a Junior in high school and I am trying to decide on a career path for me. I love the outdoors and I was considering a job in some type of agriculture. Being from Mississippi, I was raised around farming and the outdoors so it seems like becoming an Agricultural Engineer would be a great choice. Mississippi State University offers great programs in Agricultural Engineering and it seems like a great option. I am considering either going into Aquaculture or some type of Precision Agriculture but I need your opinion. Can someone tell me if this is a good choice and if you are an Agricultural Engineer can you tell me what it's like and if you like it? Also which branch of Agricultural Engineering makes the most money?

Barrett

Question answered by

Yes, becoming an Agricultural Engineer is a good choice. One thing to back me up is the need for it in the future. A job one can rely on.
