Can I check wiring without an engine installed?

I'm wondering if I can check on my wiring and lights with just a battery? I bought an older Beetle and the engine didn't come with it. Am I able to connect a battery and check my electrical equipment before I track down another engine? Or would the engine have to be in place/connected as well? Thank you to all who can give me serious advice.

Question answered by Chris

As far as lights, blinkers, dome light, cig lighter etc. can be run directly off the battery. But u will get alot of error messages on the dash because certain sensors for the engine won't be connected. But as far as all other electrical, there should be no problem. You can also use a current tester set to test the continuity of the wiring. Set to ohms, and put positive prob on positive wire ans vise versa for negative, if you get any jump in the numbers then there is no prob with the wiring.

how does electricity and batteries work?

What in a battery or in a eletrical wire powers electrical equipment, if atoms are responsible how do they react to duase the energy... Detailed yet understanable answeres apprecaited.

What happens to waste engine oil?

I do a lot of work on cars & trucks & being a responsible person(!) i take my waste engine oil to the council recycling centre & pour it into one of their waste oil containers - What happens to it after that? We hear all about paper, packaging & electrical equipment being recycled but even one of the council workers couldn't tell me what happened to waste oil.

Question answered by Manxbiker

The oil is decanted into a large holding tank where it is boiled up and left to settle. Any water is removed and the oil is then filtered. This process is repeated to produce a watery brown liquid that is used in furnaces at power stations and quarries as an alternative, recycled fuel

Can an electrical engineer work in a car company or dealership?

I want to major in electrical engineering technology and my friend wants be to work in a car dealership with him,but I'm afraid that car companies or dealerships only need mechanical engineers. Can an electrical engineer work in a car company or dealership? I was planning to get a job in sony while I'm in college, but I love cars.

Automotive manufacturing companies (eg, GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, etc) have all employed electrical engineers. There are opportunities in vehicle design, manufacturing and facilities engineering. As a practical matter, the number of jobs in facility engineering is declining as automobile companies are trying to focus more on their core interests (cars) and outsourcing non-core work (facilities) to contractors. But the good news is that cars are becoming far more complicated - in the last 20 years, most of the major technological advances have resulted for the application of digital technology to vehicle design. For example, fuel efficiency is tied very closely to the ratio of weight and speed, and the only practical of improving efficiency is enhanced engine control, which really means microprocessor technology, or electrical engineering. Other applications include things like vehicle stability systems, anti-lock braking systems, etc. And then there is the matter of electric and/or hybrid vehicles. That's heavy-duty electrical engineering. In the field of manufacturing, the car companies are trying very hard to reduce production costs, which means that they are applying more and more manufacturing automation and robots - all of which means electrical engineering. Now - that's the manufacturing side. Local dealerships are another matter. Of course, all that electronic technology in vehicles means that dealerships will need people to service that equipment. Unfortunately, having a four-year degree may overqualify you for one of those jobs.

Can I powder coat over high temp engine paint?

I am building a motorcycle and would like to powder coat the engine covers to match my wheels. The powder I am using is POLYESTER TGIC. I am not sure how well it can handle the heat though. I am planning on doing this myself to cut down on costs. What would be best way to get this done? Could I paint the covers with a high temp paint, then powder coat over the high temp paint?

Question answered by Jim Alzael

Uhm, no.... powder coating is an electrical process which requires supplying electricity to BARE metal and the electrical charge draws the powder to the metal. How are you going to supply the electrical charge at home? Do you have powder coating equipment? Powder coating requires that the surface that you are painting be electrically conductive and capable of attracting the powder... aka... bare metal surface... so you will need to sandblast first.

Can you swap something like a hemi engine into an M3?

Is is possible to take an engine from a V8 dodge hemi and put it into a v6 M3. I'm planning on buying an M3 but i want to put in a bigger engine. I got a friend who's selling his trunks V8 engine and i'm thinking of taking it and then swapping it with the M3's stock engine.

Question answered by SpeedRules

will not work, don`t even go there..... and if it did would require extensive work to frame, body, suspension, steering, and modifications to all other engine links (breathing, exhaust, electrical, driveline....in addition because the hemi or any other v8 big block is a bit of a brute in terms of weight would really throw the whole car`s ride out of sync. if you want more kick from a bmw, you have to seriously consider blower options (turbocharge 1stly, supercharge 2ndly) or nitrous kit to the existing engine and to obtain the boost\power you are seeking may require that you upgrade stock internals to forged \race ready equipment. if you are seriously looking for american muscle why would you consider a hemi into a profile that is not equipped or sized for it? why not just buy an american muscle for less money/fuss ?? cheers a confused 04 cobra (15lbs boost on the whipple and 575rwhp on the dyno) http://www.cardomain.com/member_pages/show_image.pl?image=http://memimage.cardomain.com/member_images/1/web/3169000-3169999/3169967_8_full.jpg?081519-289

Here are the "book" labor rates. I charge $45.00 an hour in my shop, most charge more. Add up all the time and multiply for your labor rate. The first number will be the warranty rate, the second is the standard rate. So under the first (replace example) 6.5 hours would be the warranty rate, 8.8 what most shops will charge for that operation. Labor Skill Level Mfg. What is the best (and safest) way to clean my car's engine?

I am getting ready to sell my 2001 Mercedes-Benz SLK 230 and I would like to have it looking "like new". I have had an auto detail business tell me they can do that for $200. I'd rather save that money by doing it myself. I can take care of the interior and exterior because I have all the equipment necessary, but am at a loss as to how to safely clean the engine. I am worried if I just spray the engine with a hose, I'll get water in some of the electrical components.

Question answered by Country Boy

If you're after a really nice clean job take your car to a wand type car wash lift the hood and turn on the soap spray. Clean everything but the insulation under the hood. Don't let anyone scare you from doing this. There's not a thing under the hood you will hurt, warp, break, crack or cause any type of electrical problem. I've been using this exact cleaning process for 45 yrs. on car and truck engines. Forget messy stinking de-greasing products which still need to be rinsed off with water. The under-hood of your car will have the stench of kerosene when using foaming de-greasing products. None of them remove absolutely all dirt, oil and grease like a wand car wash. The motor will look like new.

Which three cockpit instruments/equipment will get priority in power supply from this emergency system?

In case of engine failure the electrical power supply will also fail. For this an airliner is equipped with emergency power supplies like a ram air turbine and/or a back-up battery.
